Naboisho Camp β€” Safari Solitude in the Mara Naboisho Conservancy

Naboisho Camp sits in the Mara Naboisho Conservancy, a 200 kmΒ² community-run wildlife area to the east of the Masai Mara National Reserve. The conservancy has one of the highest lion densities in the world, exceptional leopard and cheetah sightings, and β€” crucially β€” only a handful of camps sharing the entire area. Where the main Masai Mara reserve can feel crowded at popular sightings, Naboisho delivers the same calibre of game viewing with a fraction of the vehicles.

The camp was recently rebuilt by Asilia Africa into a hybrid tented-lodge format: nine spacious suites raised on stone plinths under large thatched roofs, with canvas walls, glass doors and solid bathroom structures. The result feels more permanent and luxurious than a traditional tented camp while retaining the sensory connection to the bush β€” you still hear the hyenas at night, still feel the temperature shift at dawn, still shower with views over the acacia-dotted plains.

Location and Wildlife

The Mara Naboisho Conservancy borders the Masai Mara National Reserve to the east and is managed by more than 500 Maasai landowners in partnership with a small number of tourism operators. This model strictly limits beds and vehicles, and it works: the conservancy's wildlife density is comparable to the reserve itself, but the experience is dramatically more exclusive.

Big cats are the headline. Multiple lion prides are resident, leopard sightings are frequent in the scattered acacia woodland, and cheetah hunt the open grasslands. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and a full range of plains game are ever-present. The conservancy's habitat β€” a mix of open savanna, rocky hills and wooded valleys β€” creates the mosaic of landscapes that supports this diversity. During August and September, the Great Migration herds occasionally push into the conservancy, though this is not guaranteed.

Camp Design

The nine suites include seven standard tents and two larger family tents. Each is raised on a stone plinth with a thatched roof, glass sliding doors, canvas walls, and an outdoor shower with bush views. Inside, the design is contemporary and calm β€” muted tones, enormous beds, quality linen, daybeds for lounging between game drives. The en-suite bathroom has an indoor hot-water shower, flush toilet and twin basins in addition to the outdoor shower. Family tents add a second connected room with twin beds and a shared lounge area.

The communal area is an impressive series of thatched structures β€” a lounge with deep sofas and a fireplace, a dining tent with daily-changing menus, a bar, and an outdoor deck overlooking the conservancy. A swimming pool is set beneath the acacia canopy. Meals are farm-to-fork, with bread, cakes and ice cream made in-house and dishes paired with South African wines.

Activities

The conservancy setting unlocks activities that the national reserve does not permit. Morning and afternoon game drives are conducted in custom 4x4 vehicles, with off-road driving allowed for closer wildlife approaches. Night drives reveal a different ecosystem β€” hunting predators, bushbabies, genets and other nocturnal species. Walking safaris with Maasai guides offer a ground-level perspective. Fly camping β€” an overnight bush sleep with minimal gear β€” is available for guests staying three or more nights (minimum age 12). Hot-air balloon safaris, photographic vehicle hire, and cultural visits to local Maasai communities are also offered.

Who Is Naboisho Camp Best For?

Naboisho is the camp for travellers who want a top-quality Masai Mara experience without the crowds. It suits couples seeking romance and wildlife intensity, families with children over five who want space and flexibility, and photographers who value uncrowded sightings and off-road access. The combination of lion density, leopard frequency, fly camping and night drives makes it one of the most complete safari offerings in the greater Mara ecosystem.

SafariBando's view

Naboisho Camp is our top pick for the Masai Mara for travellers who want world-class game viewing without the vehicle crowds of the main reserve. The Naboisho Conservancy's lion density is extraordinary β€” on a typical three-night stay, you will see multiple prides, and leopard sightings are the norm rather than the exception. The recent rebuild has elevated the accommodation to luxury-lodge standards while keeping the bush feeling intact. Add fly camping, night drives and walking safaris to the mix, and Naboisho offers one of the most complete safari experiences in Kenya. Combine three nights here with three nights at Mara Bush Houses or Rekero for a comprehensive Mara circuit.
