Why Combine a Tanzania Safari with Zanzibar?
Tanzania offers two things in one country that most destinations cannot match separately: some of the finest wildlife viewing in Africa and one of the finest beach destinations in the Indian Ocean. The Stone Town UNESCO heritage city, the white-sand beaches of Nungwi and Kendwa, the reef diving at Mnemba Island and the spinner dolphin at Kizimkazi — Zanzibar alone is a complete Indian Ocean holiday destination. Combined with a Serengeti and Ngorongoro safari, it is one of the world's great two-week trips.
The logistics make it easier than it looks. A charter flight connects the Serengeti airstrip or Arusha airport to Zanzibar in 45 minutes to 1 hour — significantly cheaper and faster than routing through Dar es Salaam. The combination works seamlessly as a single booked itinerary.
How the Safari-Zanzibar Combination Works
Safari first, beach second — the universal recommendation from every operator who runs this combination, including us. The reasoning is practical: a safari involves early starts (4:30am game drives), dust, long days in the vehicle and high daily stimulation. A beach holiday that follows this is perfect recovery. Starting with the beach and ending with the safari leaves travellers wishing they had stayed at the beach — the beach has done its job and the safari feels rushed at the end.
The sequence: depart Arusha, drive the Northern Circuit (Tarangire, Ngorongoro, Serengeti), charter flight from the Serengeti airstrip directly to Zanzibar, check in to the beach hotel, switch off. The flight takes 45 minutes to 1 hour and can be timed to arrive at Zanzibar in time for a late afternoon swim and the Forodhani Night Market in the evening.
Which Zanzibar Beaches to Combine With Safari
Nungwi and Kendwa — northern beaches, all-day swimming
Nungwi and Kendwa at the northern tip of the island have minimal tidal variation — the beach is swimmable all day, which the east coast beaches are not. The most practical choice for safari travellers who want to maximise beach time. Nungwi has the widest choice of accommodation; Kendwa is slightly quieter with the famous full-moon beach party at Kendwa Rocks.
Paje and Jambiani — east coast kitesurfing and village life
Paje is Zanzibar's kitesurfing capital — consistent Kusi trade winds from June to September over a wide shallow lagoon. The east coast has a significant tidal range (not all-day swimming from the beach) but Paje's seaweed farming community and authentic village atmosphere make it the best choice for safari travellers who want cultural depth alongside the beach. Jambiani is quieter still, with the fascinating Kuza Cave freshwater pool and Kuumbi Cave rock art nearby.
Stone Town — culture and history before the beach
One or two nights in Stone Town before moving to the beach gives the Zanzibar leg cultural depth beyond sunbathing. The UNESCO-listed medina, the carved-door alleys, the old slave market site (now an Anglican Cathedral), the Forodhani Night Market and a sunset dhow cruise are the core activities. Stone Town is compact — most sights are walkable.
Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar Package Options by Duration
7 to 8 days total — 3 to 4 days safari (Tarangire, Ngorongoro, central Serengeti), 3 to 4 days Zanzibar. The shortest meaningful combination. Covers the essential Northern Circuit parks and gives enough beach days for genuine rest.
10 to 11 days total — 5 to 6 days safari (full Northern Circuit including proper Serengeti time), 4 to 5 days Zanzibar. The most popular package length. Enough time to do both components properly.
14 to 15 days total — 7 to 8 days safari (extended Serengeti, Ngorongoro Highlands walking, Olduvai Gorge), 6 to 7 days Zanzibar. The complete Tanzania experience. Time for a Mnemba Island diving day trip, a Prison Island tortoise visit and a spice farm tour alongside the beach days.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a separate visa for Zanzibar?
No. Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania — your standard Tanzania tourist visa covers entry to both the mainland and Zanzibar. No additional paperwork is required when flying between the mainland and Zanzibar.
Can I fly directly from the Serengeti to Zanzibar?
Yes. Charter aircraft fly directly from airstrips inside the Serengeti (Seronera, Kogatende, Grumeti) to Zanzibar airport in 45 to 60 minutes depending on origin airstrip. We arrange this charter as part of the combined package booking. No return to Arusha or Dar es Salaam is required.
Is a safari and Zanzibar holiday suitable for families with children?
Yes — it is one of the most popular family holiday formats. Children from age 5 upwards can join game drives in private vehicles (shared group vehicles in national parks have age minimums that do not apply to private bookings). Zanzibar is extremely family-friendly: calm lagoon beaches, the Mnarani turtle sanctuary at Nungwi, Prison Island giant tortoises and Stone Town history all work well with children.
Which is better for the Zanzibar portion — lodge or boutique hotel?
After a lodge safari, most travellers benefit from the relaxed atmosphere of a boutique beach hotel or guesthouse rather than a large resort. The scale matches the safari experience — small, personalised and unhurried. We recommend properties at Nungwi or Paje that provide that atmosphere at mid-range and luxury price points depending on your overall budget.
