All Tanzania Safari from Zanzibar
3-Day Tanzania Safari from Zanzibar to Tarangire, Ngorongoro Crater & Lake Manyara
How a Safari from Zanzibar Works
Charter aircraft fly from Zanzibar airport (ZNZ) to bush airstrips inside or adjacent to the parks in 45 minutes to 1.5 hours depending on the destination. You land, meet your guide, load the vehicle and begin game drives within minutes of arrival. No return to Dar es Salaam, no long bus journey, no lost safari time in transit.
The most common itinerary structure: fly from Zanzibar to the park airstrip on Day 1 morning, game drives Day 1 afternoon and Day 2, fly back to Zanzibar Day 2 afternoon or Day 3 morning. Two nights gives two full game-drive days and fits into most beach holidays without disrupting the overall Zanzibar time.
Best Safari Parks to Visit from Zanzibar
Nyerere National Park (Selous) — closest, most varied
Nyerere National Park is the most popular safari destination for Zanzibar-based travellers — approximately 45 minutes by charter. The park holds Africa's largest elephant population, enormous Nile crocodile and hippo on the Rufiji River, and one of Tanzania's most reliable African wild dog territories. The Rufiji River boat safari — watching hippo, crocodile, elephant and waterbirds from a motorboat — is the defining Nyerere experience and unavailable at any northern Tanzania park.
Mikumi National Park — easiest 1-day or overnight option
Mikumi is the most accessible safari from Zanzibar for a single overnight. Open floodplain habitat gives excellent visibility year-round: lion, elephant, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and hippo. A 2-day Mikumi safari from Zanzibar is one of our most frequently booked short-break options.
Ruaha National Park — for the serious safari traveller
Ruaha is Tanzania's largest national park and one of its least visited relative to wildlife density. Greater kudu, sable antelope, roan antelope and wild dog alongside the standard Big Five. Requires 3 to 4 days minimum. Flight from Zanzibar is approximately 1.5 hours.
Northern Circuit (Serengeti / Ngorongoro) from Zanzibar
A Zanzibar-based visitor can reach the Serengeti by charter (approximately 1.5 hours) and combine 3 to 4 days of Northern Circuit driving with a return to Zanzibar for a beach finish. Ideal for travellers who want both — the safari comes first, Zanzibar is the holiday's conclusion.
How Long Should a Safari from Zanzibar Be?
The minimum meaningful safari is one night and two days — enough for a Rufiji boat safari at Nyerere or a full game-drive day at Mikumi. Two nights and three days is the sweet spot: two full game-drive days without cutting Zanzibar beach time excessively.
For the northern parks (Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire), allow 4 to 5 days — the driving distances within the northern circuit make a 2-day visit feel rushed.
Safari-Beach Sequence: Which Order?
Safari first, then beach. After a safari — early starts, dusty game drives, full days in the vehicle — a few days on a Nungwi or Paje beach feels exactly right. Starting with the beach and ending with the safari leaves travellers wishing they had more beach time. The reverse works perfectly.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get from Zanzibar to the safari parks?
By charter aircraft — small planes (4 to 12 seats) that fly directly from Zanzibar airport to bush airstrips inside or adjacent to the parks. We arrange the charter as part of the safari booking. Flight durations range from 45 minutes to Nyerere to 1.5 hours to the northern parks.
Can I do a safari from Zanzibar in one day?
A day trip from Zanzibar to Mikumi or Nyerere is physically possible but not recommended — the flight time each way leaves less than 6 hours on the ground. One night gives a full afternoon and morning of game drives, which is a meaningful safari experience. Two nights is better.
Which is better for a Zanzibar safari extension — Nyerere or the Serengeti?
Nyerere is closer (45 min vs 1.5 hr), less expensive (shorter flight and lower park fees) and offers the unique Rufiji boat safari. Serengeti is the more famous park and can include a Ngorongoro Crater game drive. For 2 days: Nyerere. For 4 to 5 days: Serengeti and Northern Circuit. For 3 days: either works well.
