Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp — Simple Meets Sublime

Sanctuary Ngorongoro Crater Camp occupies a prime position in an acacia forest on the Ngorongoro Conservation Area rim, barely 15 minutes' drive from the crater floor. As Chalo Africa puts it: "Here, close to the rim of the largest extinct volcano in the world, the simple meets the sublime." Ten impeccable, uncomplicated tents give direct and easy access to one of the world's most extraordinary wildlife areas without the scale and infrastructure of the larger lodge-hotels on the rim.

The camp is operated by Sanctuary Retreats (the A&K Sanctuary brand) and brings the same commitment to service and quality that characterises Sanctuary Swala and Sanctuary Kusini. Updated in 2019, the tents are genuinely luxurious rather than merely functional — wood-framed furniture, excellent beds, en-suite bathrooms with bucket showers prepared to the perfect temperature by a personal tent attendant. The dining is at individual table settings placed around camp with unique viewpoints, creating a more intimate atmosphere than the resort-scale crater lodges nearby.

Accommodation

Ten luxury safari tents — 8 standard tents and up to 2 family configurations available — each with wood-framed furniture, comfortable king or twin beds, en-suite bathroom with bucket shower (fire-heated to personal preference) and flush toilet, hair dryer, plug points, small sitting area with safari chairs. Personal tent attendants fill each bucket shower on request throughout the day. Coffee and biscuits are served on the small sitting area outside the tent before the morning game drive. A campfire is lit each evening. Dining is at individual tables positioned around camp for the best views. A wraparound decking area and new lounge provide social space.

Activities

The central activity is the crater game drive — 15 minutes from camp to the crater descent road. The Ngorongoro Crater floor is home to the Big Five (including some of the largest remaining bull tusker elephants in Africa and a significant black rhino population), thousands of wildebeest and zebra, large flamingo flocks, hippos and an extraordinary density of predators. Cultural visits to nearby Maasai communities are a standard offering. Guided walks around the crater rim are available. Day trips to Olduvai Gorge.
