Beho Beho — The Founding Camp of the Selous, in the Highland Baobabs

Beho Beho is the oldest camp in what is now Nyerere National Park — its site was first used as early as 1972, making it the original Selous camp. The name means "breeze" in Swahili, a fitting description for its unique hillside setting in the northern highlands of the park — away from the river and flood plains where most other camps sit. Stone bandas (stone-built, palm-leaf thatched cottages) are arranged along a gentle hillside dotted with ancient baobabs, with broad views across the woodland ridgelines where elephant, buffalo and giraffe move through the terrain.

Beho Beho is deliberately individual — its character derives from its eccentric private ownership rather than corporate management. The central lounge mixes Persian rugs from the owners' family home, African carvings and European furniture, lending the atmosphere of "a slightly eccentric family home." Coffee-table books and family photos sit on side tables. A full-sized billiards table and a swimming pool with Kipalala Valley views complete the communal picture.

The bush walks and game activities at Beho Beho include historically unique offerings: World War I trenches where artefacts are still visible, the grave of Frederick Courtney Selous (the legendary hunter after whom the reserve was named, killed in action here in 1917), and hot springs in riparian woodland where guests can swim. Reviews from February 2026 rate the experience a flawless "10/10 in every category."

SafariBando's view

Beho Beho is the most historically and ecologically distinctive camp in Nyerere National Park — stone bandas on a highland since 1972, the graves and trenches of WWI battles, Frederic Selous' grave, hot springs and an eccentric private-house atmosphere that no chain can replicate. February 2026 reviews call it "flawless — 10/10 in every category." At $1,250 pppn it is the premium choice for Nyerere, and for travellers for whom history, individuality and authenticity matter as much as wildlife.
