Boundary Hill Lodge — Stone and Wood on the Edge of Tarangire

Boundary Hill Lodge is built among rocky outcrops and cliffs on the boundary of the Tarangire Conservation Area, approximately 12 kilometres from the Boundary Hill Gate to Tarangire National Park. The lodge sits high above the Silale and Gosawa Swamps — permanent water sources that attract some of the most concentrated elephant, buffalo and diverse birdlife anywhere in the Tarangire ecosystem. From the lodge's elevated position, the swamp landscape stretches away in every direction beneath a forest of massive baobabs and acacias.

The lodge is constructed entirely from local materials — wood, natural stone and burnt brick — that blend into the colours and textures of the rocky hillside. The eight individually designed rooms have been placed carefully among the boulders so that no room overlooks another, and each has its own distinct character while sharing the same commitment to "quietly understated luxury" — a phrase the lodge uses that the reviews confirm.

Accommodation

Eight rooms in total: five standard rooms, two double suites with cast-iron freestanding baths, and one family suite. All have en-suite facilities with separate showers, spacious private balconies with panoramic views, king-size beds, comfortable couches and sitting areas. Three of the rooms have the distinctive cast-iron bath — a romantic touch that sits in front of floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the swamp and baobab landscape. The family suite has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a sitting/entrance area, and a large veranda with a fireplace. Activities include hiking, biking, archery and ecotours in addition to game drives. A lobby fireplace provides warmth during the cooler highland evenings.

Activities

Game drives to Tarangire National Park via the Boundary Hill Gate (12 km) cover elephant herds in the tens of thousands during the dry season, lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, zebra and the park's iconic baobab-studded landscape. Archery and hiking on the lodge's rocky hill are available for between-drive activity. Ecotour walks explore the wildlife and vegetation of the surrounding conservation area. Hot-air balloon safaris over Tarangire can be arranged.

Boundary Hill is an excellent choice for couples and families who want a characterful, small-scale lodge with genuinely beautiful architecture and swamp views, at a price significantly below the luxury camp tier. The cast-iron bath suites are among the most romantic rooms in the Tarangire area. The family suite with fireplace is excellent for families wanting communal evening space. The archery range and hiking trails give non-driving activities that larger lodges often lack.
