Sanctuary Swala Camp β Remote Seclusion at the Gurusi Wetlands
Sanctuary Swala Camp occupies one of the most remote and private positions in Tarangire National Park β tucked under a canopy of giant acacia trees at the edge of the Gurusi wetlands, with no other camps nearby and no shared sightings. The camp's name (Swala means Grant's gazelle in Swahili) reflects the resident impala that graze around the tents, but it is the waterhole directly in front of camp that defines the experience: lions, leopards, bull elephants in herds of extraordinary size (the camp record is 92 individual elephant bulls at one time) and a rotating cast of Tarangire wildlife come to drink within metres of the dining deck and pool.
Sanctuary Retreats (the safari arm of Abercrombie & Kent) rebuilt the camp in 2009, and the 12 canvas pavilions represent genuinely excellent quality β not the highest luxury in Tarangire, but some of the best wildlife proximity and the most remote setting. Tanzania Odyssey rates it as "probably the most luxurious camp in the Tarangire National Park."
Accommodation
Twelve canvas pavilions are shaded by tall acacia trees, each with an open-plan arrangement featuring king or twin beds, campaign chairs and plush sofas. En-suite bathrooms have both indoor and outdoor showers. Private verandas face the waterhole β from sunrise through sundowners, the entertainment outside the tent window is continuous. The main guest area is set on stilts around a massive ancient baobab, with the dining area, lounge and library all enjoying exceptional waterhole and savannah views. A sparkling infinity pool overlooks the waterhole β watching elephant at the water from the pool is a recurring guest highlight.
Activities
Morning and afternoon game drives in open 4x4 vehicles explore Tarangire's remote north and the Gurusi wetland area β a part of the park rarely accessed by other lodges. Walking safaris with armed rangers explore the acacia savannah at ground level. Night game drives illuminate Tarangire's nocturnal life. Bush picnics, sundowner cocktails and campfire dinners in bush settings round out the programme. Hot-air balloon safaris can be arranged. The remote location means game drives often have the best viewing areas entirely to themselves.
Who Is Sanctuary Swala Best For?
Swala is the top choice for travellers who want the most remote, private Tarangire experience at a luxury price point. The waterhole wildlife, the walking safari programme, the night drives and the elephant proximity are compelling. It suits wildlife enthusiasts and photographers who want solitude and prolonged time with animals, honeymooners who want a private waterhole sunset, and Northern Circuit veterans wanting to see a rarely visited part of Tarangire. Tanzania Odyssey calls it the most luxurious camp in the park.

Sanctuary Swala is the best luxury camp in Tarangire for wildlife proximity. The Gurusi wetland location and private waterhole deliver a level of elephant, lion and leopard access that other Tarangire lodges cannot match from camp. Walking safaris, night drives and the most remote position in the park give it a distinct advantage for serious wildlife travellers. Tanzania Odyssey rates it the most luxurious camp in Tarangire, and the A&K Sanctuary management ensures consistent quality. Our first recommendation for anyone wanting a private, wildlife-centred Tarangire experience at the luxury tier.β The SafariBando team
