Chem Chem Lodge — The Home of the Slow Safari

Chem Chem Lodge occupies its own 4,000-acre private concession within the Burunge Wildlife Management Area, positioned between two of northern Tanzania's most rewarding parks — Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara. The lodge coined the phrase "slow safari" and lives by it: this is a place where you are encouraged to step out of the vehicle, walk the bush with Maasai guides, jog with warriors at sunrise, or simply sit on your veranda and watch elephants at the waterhole.

The concession setting is the key differentiator. Unlike camps inside national parks (where walking is restricted and off-road driving is prohibited), Chem Chem's private land allows complete freedom of movement — guided walks at any time, off-road tracking, night drives, and cultural visits to Maasai homesteads that feel genuine rather than staged. Eight tented suites — seven standard and one family — are raised on wooden walkways among acacias and palm trees, each with approximately 100 square metres of space. The interiors are some of the most sophisticated on the Northern Circuit: earthy tones, stone floors, handcrafted furniture, black-and-white photography of Tanzania on the walls, indoor and outdoor showers, freestanding bathtubs, air conditioning, ceiling fans, coffee machines, mini fridges and in-room safes. Private verandas with campaign chairs and day beds overlook the surrounding bush. The family suite connects two suites via a wooden bridge.

The main lodge is architecturally striking — designed to echo the form of a flamingo with wings spread. It houses a gourmet restaurant, a chic bar, a library, an eagle's-nest viewing tower with panoramic Lake Manyara views, and the Chem Chem Amani Spa. A swimming pool is tucked beneath the trees. Dining is a highlight — locally sourced produce, Swahili-influenced cuisine, and meals served in locations ranging from the restaurant to the boma fireside to a 3,000-year-old baobab tree.

Activities

Walking safaris are the signature experience — morning and afternoon walks with Maasai guides through the acacia woodland and lake fringe. Running with Maasai warriors is a unique offering for the energetic. Game drives in the concession and into Tarangire National Park and Lake Manyara National Park cover three distinct ecosystems in a single stay. Sundowner drinks on the Lake Manyara shoreline are a daily ritual. Cultural visits to Maasai communities are intimate and unhurried. The Amani Spa offers treatments that can be taken indoors or under the open sky. Helicopter excursions over the Rift Valley are available at additional cost.
