Isoitok Camp Manyara โ Maasai Community Safari on the Rift Valley Escarpment
Isoitok Camp Manyara sits on the gently rolling hills of Losimingori on Maasai community land above Lake Manyara โ at an elevation that provides sweeping views across the Great Rift Valley and the shimmering expanse of the lake below. The camp is surrounded by the Esilalei Maasai community, with whom it has built a deep and longstanding partnership through the African Roots Foundation (ARF): a platform for small-scale, sustainable projects that include clean water provision, solar lighting distribution, sanitation improvements and grassland rehabilitation.
Isoitok is classified on TripAdvisor as the third-best property in the Lake Manyara area. What earns this ranking is not luxury โ it is consistency, personal service, exceptional food and a genuine cultural experience. The Maasai medicine walk, the boma visit, the traditional song and dance, and the frank conversations with community members are not performance: they are a real engagement with the people whose land the camp occupies and whose partnership makes the camp possible.
Accommodation
Nine deluxe tented suites โ including one family tent โ are hybrid structures with fitted wooden doors, timber flooring and flowing rock-wall bathrooms, all with custom handmade furniture. Standard deluxe tents have a comfortable double or twin bed, lounge chair, writing desk and outdoor shower for stargazing while washing off the day's dust. The family tent has two separate bedrooms (sleeping up to five) with an adjoining rock-wall bathroom and a shared sitting area. WiFi is deliberately absent โ the camp's philosophy is full immersion in the Rift Valley landscape and the sounds of the bush.
The open-fronted mess tent commands superb views over the savanna towards the Great Rift Valley and Lake Manyara below. Meals are a genuine highlight: Tanzanian and international fusion cuisine prepared by a trained chef, using local produce. The camp also operates a "bush TV" โ an outdoor fire and seating area with direct views over the valley at dusk.
Activities
Game drives to Lake Manyara National Park, Tarangire National Park and Ngorongoro Crater are all available from the camp's convenient Northern Circuit location. Cultural activities on Maasai land include medicine walks with community guides identifying medicinal plants, boma visits to learn about Maasai daily life, traditional song and dance, and a viewpoint walk with bush refreshments. A community contribution of $10 per person per night is charged and donated directly to the ARF. Stargazing is exceptional at this elevation and away from any light pollution.
Who Is Isoitok Best For?
Isoitok is for travellers who want to complement their game driving with a meaningful cultural experience on the Northern Circuit. The Maasai community engagement here is the most substantive of any camp in the Manyara area โ not a brief village visit, but a multi-day partnership expressed through walks, conversations, meals cooked with community ingredients, and the knowledge that the camp's economics directly benefit the land's owners. It is also excellent value, making it a strong choice for budget-conscious travellers who don't want to compromise on quality of experience.

Isoitok Camp is one of the most honest and rewarding camps on the Northern Circuit at any price point. The African Roots Foundation community partnership is not window dressing โ it is the reason the camp exists and the reason it is trusted by the Esilalei Maasai to operate on their land. The food is exceptional, the Rift Valley views are extraordinary, and the camp's philosophy of no WiFi and full bush immersion is one we strongly endorse. At $330 per person per night it is outstanding value. Combine it with a night at Plantation Lodge (30 minutes away in Karatu) for a complete Manyara-area experience without breaking the budget.โ The SafariBando team
