About the Kilimanjaro Marathon
The Kilimanjaro Marathon is one of Africa's most distinctive running events — a point-to-point course through coffee and banana farms on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro, starting and finishing in Moshi town, with the mountain visible for much of the race on clear mornings. The event typically takes place in late February or early March (check the official Kilimanjaro Marathon website for the current year's date) and draws field sizes of 4,000 to 6,000 runners from across Africa and internationally.
The course runs through local villages, past Chagga coffee farms and along roads lined with schoolchildren cheering in their uniforms — an atmosphere that most international city marathons cannot replicate. The finish line in Moshi town has a festival atmosphere with local food, live music and the post-race celebration that typically extends through the afternoon.
Race Categories
Full Marathon — 42.2 km
The full marathon starts early in Moshi and follows a course through the lower Kilimanjaro slopes, passing through villages in the Moshi Rural district before returning to town. The terrain is not flat — there are rolling climbs on the outward leg and some descent sections on the return — and the altitude (Moshi sits at approximately 800m, with some course sections at 900 to 1,000m) is a consideration for runners not acclimatised to elevation. Arriving in Moshi 2 to 3 days before the race is advisable for partial acclimatisation.
Half Marathon — 21.1 km
The half marathon course takes a different route through the Moshi area and is generally considered more accessible for runners less experienced with African road racing conditions. Still rolling terrain, still affected by altitude, but a manageable proposition for regular half-marathon runners with appropriate preparation. The largest field of the three race categories.
5 km Fun Run
The 5 km fun run is family-friendly and untimed — open to all ages and fitness levels, including children. The most social of the three categories and a genuine option for non-competitive runners who want to participate in the event atmosphere without the pressure of a timed race.
What Our Kilimanjaro Marathon Packages Include
Our marathon packages are built around the race week experience:
Accommodation in Moshi — we book rooms at established Moshi guesthouses and hotels at a range of price points. Race week accommodation fills up months in advance; booking early is essential. We secure allocation and handle all confirmation.
Airport transfers — from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO, 50 km from Moshi) to your hotel and return. The airport transfer on arrival is an important detail — race week arrivals can be chaotic and having a confirmed driver waiting matters.
Pre-race acclimatisation activities — a Materuni Waterfall and coffee farm visit or a lower Kilimanjaro slopes walk 2 to 3 days before the race gives gentle altitude exposure and a cultural experience on the mountain you are running under. These are not compulsory but are recommended for runners arriving from sea level destinations.
Race day logistics support — transport to the start line, bag storage and post-race hotel return.
Combining the Marathon with a Kilimanjaro Climb
Some runners use the Kilimanjaro Marathon as the first chapter of a larger Tanzania trip, following the race with a Kilimanjaro climb. This sequence — race first, climb second — has a practical problem: running a marathon 3 to 5 days before a Kilimanjaro climb leaves the legs significantly fatigued for the early climbing days. The reverse sequence (climb first, then race after the recovery period) works better physiologically but requires careful scheduling to return from the summit in time for the race.
For most runners, the cleaner approach is one or the other on the same trip: race the marathon and do a Northern Circuit safari after, or climb Kilimanjaro and do the race the following year. We are happy to advise on the scheduling if you want to attempt both on the same trip.
Post-Race Safari and Zanzibar Extensions
The Kilimanjaro Marathon takes place in late February or early March — peak calving season in the Serengeti. The timing makes it one of the finest possible moments to add a post-race safari: the wildebeest calving in the southern Serengeti and Ndutu, intense predator activity and far fewer visitors than the July to October dry season. A 4 to 5 day Northern Circuit safari directly after the race (2 to 3 days recovery, then safari departure from Arusha) works well as a combined trip.
Zanzibar is also a natural post-race destination — 45 minutes by charter flight from Kilimanjaro or Dar es Salaam, with warm Indian Ocean water that is the perfect recovery environment after a marathon. See our Zanzibar holiday packages for beach add-on options.
Frequently Asked Questions
When is the Kilimanjaro Marathon 2027?
The Kilimanjaro Marathon typically takes place in late February or early March. The 2027 date has not yet been confirmed at the time of writing — check the official Kilimanjaro Marathon website (kilimanjaromarathon.com) for the confirmed date and registration opening. Contact us once the date is confirmed and we will arrange your accommodation and logistics package.
How do I register for the Kilimanjaro Marathon?
Race registration is handled directly through the Kilimanjaro Marathon organisation (kilimanjaromarathon.com) — we do not process race entries. Our packages cover accommodation, transfers and safari extensions built around your confirmed race entry. Register for the race first, then contact us to arrange the surrounding logistics.
How hard is the Kilimanjaro Marathon course?
Harder than most runners expect. The combination of altitude (800 to 1,000m throughout, with sections approaching 1,100m), rolling terrain on unsealed roads and heat (late February temperatures in Moshi are 25 to 32°C by mid-morning) makes this a challenging course for personal bests. Most runners targeting a fast time train specifically for heat and altitude. Most runners targeting the experience rather than a time finish comfortably within cutoff.
Can I bring my family to watch the Kilimanjaro Marathon?
Yes — Moshi is a welcoming town and the marathon atmosphere on race day is genuinely festive. Children can participate in the 5 km fun run. Non-running family members can be positioned at the finish line or at village points along the course for spectating. We arrange accommodation for entire groups and can include cultural activities for family members during race training days.
