Kilimanjaro Marathon, 7-Day Machame Climb & 4-Day Tanzania Safari

Overview

This 14-day package combines three of Tanzania's most celebrated experiences: summiting Africa's highest mountain via the scenic 7-day Machame Route, running the Kilimanjaro Marathon, and exploring the northern wildlife circuit on a 4-day safari. The climb comes first, ascending through Kilimanjaro's five distinct climate zones to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres. After descending and a recovery day in Moshi, the marathon follows. The safari then rounds out the package with full days in Tarangire National Park, the Serengeti, and a descent into the Ngorongoro Crater.

The 4-day safari extension gives more time in the Serengeti than the 2-day version, including a full day in the central plains followed by a transfer to the crater. For the shorter version of this package with a 2-day safari, see our Kilimanjaro Marathon, climb and 2-day safari package.

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport — Moshi

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport your representative meets you and transfers you to your accommodation in Moshi, the base for the Kilimanjaro climb.

Distance: Approximately 50 km from the airport to Moshi

Activity: Transfer and check-in

Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi

Meals: Breakfast

Day 2

Machame Gate (1,800 m) to Machame Camp (3,000 m)

Departing from Moshi at around 9:00 AM, you travel to Machame Gate where your porters, cooks, and guides join the group. The trail begins through Kilimanjaro's cloud forest, dense with moss and lichen-draped trees. As altitude increases, the forest thins to heather and tall grasses, with views of Kibo Peak ahead on clear days.

Distance: 9 km; elevation gain 1,200 m (from 1,800 m to 3,000 m)

Activity: Trek to Machame Camp

Accommodation: Machame Camp (tented)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 3

Machame Camp (3,000 m) to Shira Camp (3,840 m)

Several uphill sections cross more exposed terrain today — carry sufficient water on clear days. Vegetation changes noticeably with altitude, with giant groundsel and Lobelia deckenii replacing the lower forest. Multiple viewpoints offer panoramas of the plains below and the twin peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi above. After lunch you cross the Shira Plateau, formed by ancient lava flows.

Distance: 7 km; elevation gain 840 m (from 3,000 m to 3,840 m)

Activity: Trek to Shira Camp

Accommodation: Shira Camp (tented)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 4

Shira Camp (3,840 m) to Barranco Camp (3,950 m) via Lava Tower

Although the net elevation gain today is just 110 metres, the route climbs to 4,530 metres at the Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp — making this the most important acclimatisation day on the route. You hike east across the Shira Plateau before turning south through increasingly barren landscape. Barranco Camp, set among giant groundsel, is widely regarded as the most scenic campsite on the Machame Route.

Distance: 10 km; total elevation gain 690 m to 4,530 m before descent to 3,950 m

Activity: Trek to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower (optional detour)

Accommodation: Barranco Camp (tented)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 5

Barranco Camp (3,950 m) to Karanga Valley (4,200 m)

The day begins with the Barranco Wall — a 1.5-hour scramble requiring use of hands in places. The effort is rewarded with spectacular views from the top before a short descent into the greener Karanga Valley. The camp is positioned on the ridge above the valley floor for ongoing acclimatisation.

Distance: 7 km; elevation gain 250 m (from 3,950 m to 4,200 m)

Activity: Trek to Karanga Valley via Barranco Wall

Accommodation: Karanga Valley Camp (tented)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 6

Karanga Valley (4,200 m) to Barafu Camp (4,600 m)

After breakfast the route continues to Barafu Camp, the high camp and launch point for the summit push. En route you pass views of the Heim, Kersten, and Decken Glaciers and the junction for the Mweka descent route. The alpine desert landscape at this altitude has little vegetation, but Barafu offers extraordinary views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. An early dinner and early bedtime are essential — the summit push begins before midnight.

Distance: 6 km; elevation gain 400 m (from 4,200 m to 4,600 m)

Activity: Trek to Barafu Camp

Accommodation: Barafu Camp (tented)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 7

Barafu Camp (4,600 m) to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m) to Mweka Camp (3,100 m)

The summit push begins around midnight by headlamp. The ascent to the crater rim at Stella Point is the most demanding section — steep, cold, and physically taxing at altitude. From Stella Point the trail levels off for the final hour's walk to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. After celebrating at the summit and taking photographs, the long descent begins: back to Barafu for breakfast and a short rest, then continuing down to Mweka Camp.

Distance: 18 km; elevation gain 1,295 m to Uhuru Peak; elevation loss 2,795 m to Mweka Camp

Activity: Midnight summit push to Uhuru Peak; descent to Mweka Camp

Accommodation: Mweka Camp (tented)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 8

Mweka Camp (3,100 m) to Mweka Gate (1,500 m) — Return to Moshi

The final descent passes through Kilimanjaro's cloud forest — beautiful but potentially slippery, so care is needed underfoot. At Mweka Gate, climbers sign the register and receive their summit certificates (green for Stella Point, gold for Uhuru Peak). Vehicles are waiting for the transfer back to Moshi.

Distance: 10 km; elevation loss 1,600 m (from 3,100 m to 1,500 m)

Activity: Final descent to Mweka Gate; transfer to Moshi

Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Day 9

Rest Day — Race Number Collection

A dedicated rest and recovery day in Moshi ahead of the marathon. You have the opportunity to collect your race number and explore the town at your leisure.

Distance: N/A – rest day in Moshi

Activity: Race number collection; optional town exploration

Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi

Meals: Breakfast

Day 10

Kilimanjaro Marathon — Race Day

Race day. Both the full marathon (42 km) and half marathon (21 km) are available. The course takes runners through the Kilimanjaro foothills with views of Africa's highest mountain throughout.

Distance: Course runs through the Kilimanjaro foothills

Activity: Kilimanjaro Marathon (full or half marathon)

Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi

Meals: Breakfast

Day 11

Tarangire National Park

After breakfast you depart for Tarangire National Park for a full-day game drive. The park is renowned for its large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees, and the Tarangire River — the only permanent water source in the area, which draws exceptional concentrations of wildlife. Giraffes, zebras, lions, leopards, and over 500 bird species are all regularly encountered.

Distance: Approximately 120 km from Moshi area to Tarangire

Activity: Full-day game drive in Tarangire National Park

Accommodation: Lodge or camp near Karatu

Meals: Full Board

Day 12

Serengeti National Park

After breakfast you head to the world-renowned Serengeti National Park. The park is home to exceptional wildlife diversity — the Big Five alongside cheetahs, large herds of zebra and wildebeest, giraffes, hippos, and crocodiles. A full day of game drives in the central Seronera area gives sustained time in one of Africa's finest wildlife habitats.

Distance: Approximately 200 km from Karatu to central Serengeti

Activity: Full-day game drives in central Serengeti

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in central Serengeti

Meals: Full Board

Day 13

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Conservation Area

After breakfast you begin with a morning game drive in the Serengeti before travelling toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The crater — the world's largest intact, inactive volcanic caldera — spans approximately 260 square kilometres and is home to one of Africa's highest concentrations of wildlife. You arrive at the rim in the afternoon for dinner and overnight.

Distance: Approximately 145 km from Serengeti to the Ngorongoro crater rim

Activity: Morning Serengeti game drive; afternoon transfer to Ngorongoro

Accommodation: Lodge or camp near Karatu

Meals: Full Board

Day 14

Ngorongoro Crater Game Drive — Departure

The crater floor supports lions, elephants, hippos, buffalo, and the rare black rhino alongside a wide variety of antelope and waterbirds. After the drive you transfer to Arusha or Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departure flight.

Frequently asked questions

How does this package differ from the 12-day Kilimanjaro Marathon and safari?

This 14-day version extends the safari from 2 days to 4 days, adding a full day in the Serengeti and a separate morning game drive before the Ngorongoro transfer. The climb and marathon portions are identical to the 12-day package.

Is previous mountaineering experience required?

No technical climbing experience is needed. The Machame Route is a non-technical trek. A good level of cardiovascular fitness is essential, along with adequate preparation. The Barranco Wall scramble requires use of hands but is not technical climbing.

Does this package cover both the full and half marathon?

Yes. The marathon ticket covers either the full marathon (42 km) or the half marathon (21 km). Please specify your preference at booking.

When does the Kilimanjaro Marathon take place?

The Kilimanjaro Marathon is an annual event in Moshi. Please contact us for the current year's race date and to confirm availability before booking.

What does the price include?

Hotel accommodation in Moshi, mountain accommodation in tents, all meals during the climb, certified mountain guides, porters and cook, all TANAPA park fees and climbing permits, safety equipment including emergency oxygen, summit certificate, marathon ticket, 3 nights safari lodge accommodation on full board, private safari vehicle and guide, all safari park fees, and airport transfers. International flights and visa fees are not included.

What fitness is required?

A high level of cardiovascular fitness is required for both the Kilimanjaro climb and the marathon. We recommend maintaining regular hiking or running training for at least 2 to 3 months beforehand. Please consult a doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking high-altitude trekking.

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

Most nationalities require a tourist visa, available as an e-visa before travel or on arrival. Yellow fever documentation may be required. Consult a travel health clinic well in advance.

What if I cannot summit Kilimanjaro?

Your guide will monitor your condition throughout and make recommendations based on altitude sickness symptoms and fitness. Not all climbers reach the summit, and turning back when necessary is the safe decision. The marathon and safari portions of the package proceed as planned regardless of summit outcome.
