The "tented lodge" name is slightly misleading — as many guests have noted, the rooms are more like permanent structures with canvas walls: wooden frame, pitched thatch roof, solid wooden veranda, and proper en-suite bathrooms with hot running water. The rustic-comfortable formula has earned consistent praise for warmth of service, quality of food (waiter service in the dining room, not buffet) and the distinctive escarpment atmosphere where silvery-cheeked hornbills call in the morning and the lake turns golden at dusk.

Location and Setting

The lodge is outside the national park, on private community land, which unlocks activities not permitted inside the park. Guided botanical walks with the lodge's highly knowledgeable naturalists (frequently name-checked in reviews) identify medicinal plants and introduce the extraordinary tree species of the escarpment forest. Cycling excursions into Mto wa Mbu town allow exploration of one of Tanzania's most ethnically diverse communities. Game drives into Lake Manyara National Park (25 minutes away) cover the tree-climbing lions, hippos, elephants, flamingos and superb birdlife.

Accommodation

Twenty-seven tented rooms — standard rooms, two honeymoon suites and two family cottages — are spaced across the 5-hectare site at respectful distances from each other. Each has a wooden plinth, pitched thatch roof, canvas walls, a wooden private veranda with escarpment views, en-suite bathroom with hot and cold running water, and electricity. The honeymoon suites have more elaborate interiors and better lake views. Family cottages sleep two adults and up to four children in connected rooms. The main lodge has an open-sided restaurant with waiter service (not buffet — a notable distinction), a bar with sun-deck, and panoramic Rift Valley views.
