Kilimanjaro and Safari Packages

A Kilimanjaro and safari package combines Africa's most famous mountain climb with Africa's finest wildlife destination in a single Tanzania trip. Seven days on the mountain to Uhuru Peak, then three to five days of game drives in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater — the full Tanzania experience without two separate flights.

Safaribando operates from Moshi, at the base of Kilimanjaro, and from Arusha, the gateway to the Northern Safari Circuit. Both legs of the combination are designed, guided and logistically managed by our team — no handoff between operators, no coordination gap. Why Combine Kilimanjaro with a Safari?

Kilimanjaro and the Northern Safari Circuit share the same gateway infrastructure: Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), 50 km from Moshi and 80 km from Arusha. This makes combining the two not just logical but efficient — one international flight, one Tanzania trip, two completely different experiences of the country. The mountain gives the physical achievement and the high-altitude landscape; the safari gives the wildlife and the vast open plains. Together they give Tanzania in full.

The combination also solves the post-climb recovery question. After 7 days on Kilimanjaro, you need 1 to 2 rest days before driving long distances or returning to altitude. A safari is perfect post-climb recovery: you sit in a vehicle, eat well, see extraordinary things and let your body return to normal. Most Kilimanjaro trekkers who add a safari describe it as the ideal second act.

How to Sequence the Combination

The standard sequence is Kilimanjaro first, safari second — and this is the right order for several practical reasons. Fitness is at its peak before the mountain, not after. The safari is physically passive (sitting in a vehicle), making it the natural recovery activity. And the safari ends in Arusha — the same town where most international flights depart — making logistics clean.

The reverse sequence (safari first, mountain second) is occasionally requested by travellers who arrive on a specific date and need the safari to run first to allow guide scheduling. It works logistically but means climbing on legs that have already been in a safari vehicle for a week. We advise against it for most trekkers.

The Kilimanjaro Leg

Our most popular Kilimanjaro routes for the combination package:

Machame Route — 7 days (recommended for most trekkers)

The Machame Route gives the right balance of acclimatisation, scenery and summit success rate for trekkers combining the mountain with a post-climb safari. Seven days on Machame (including the extra acclimatisation night at Karanga) produces a significantly higher summit rate than the 6-day option and leaves the trekker in reasonable condition for game drives 2 to 3 days after descent.

Lemosho Route — 8 days (for those with more time)

Eight days on Lemosho gives the finest overall Kilimanjaro experience — the western approach across the Shira Plateau, the Southern Circuit traverse and the best acclimatisation profile of any route except the Northern Circuit. Ideal for trekkers with 14 or more days in Tanzania who want to do both the mountain and the safari thoroughly.

Rongai Route — 6 or 7 days (quietest option)

The northern approach from the Kenyan border. A good choice for trekkers who want a quieter mountain experience. The 7-day Rongai works well for the combination package, though acclimatisation is slightly lower than 7-day Machame.

The Safari Leg

The safari component of a Kilimanjaro combination package is built around the post-climb recovery reality: 2 to 3 days of gentle activity in a comfortable vehicle is exactly what the body needs after 7 days at altitude. We position the parks accordingly:

3-day safari — Ngorongoro and Tarangire

The minimum meaningful safari after Kilimanjaro. Ngorongoro Crater descent on Day 1 (gentle, dramatic, requires no physical exertion), Tarangire on Day 2 and Day 3 (elephant herds, baobabs, excellent birding). Both parks are within comfortable driving distance of Arusha and each other. Black rhino, lion, elephant and the crater experience in 3 days.

4-day safari — Northern Circuit without Zanzibar

Add the Serengeti to the Ngorongoro and Tarangire combination. Four days gives a proper Serengeti game drive with overnight in or adjacent to the park — the plains experience that most people specifically come to Tanzania for. The full Northern Circuit without a Zanzibar extension, returning to Arusha for departure.

5 to 7 days — Full circuit, possible Zanzibar finish

A 5 to 7 day safari after Kilimanjaro covers all four major Northern Circuit parks — Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro and the Serengeti — with enough time in each to do it properly. Adding a charter flight from the Serengeti to Zanzibar at the end creates a 14 to 16 day Tanzania itinerary that covers the mountain, the wildlife and the beach. The complete Tanzania trip.

Practical Logistics of the Combination

The Kilimanjaro climb ends at Moshi. The safari begins in Arusha, 80 km west. We handle the transfer between the two. You need 1 to 2 rest days between descent and the start of the safari — we build this into the package as hotel nights in Arusha or Moshi. These rest days are important: starting game drives the morning after descending from Kilimanjaro is possible but not recommended. The body needs 24 to 48 hours of flatland rest.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a Kilimanjaro and safari combination take?

The minimum practical combination is 11 days: 7 days on the mountain (Machame), 1 to 2 rest days, 3 days safari. The most popular length is 13 to 14 days: 7 days Kilimanjaro, 2 rest days, 5 days Northern Circuit safari. Adding Zanzibar extends to 17 to 18 days for the complete Tanzania experience.

Do I need to be very fit to do Kilimanjaro and a safari?

The fitness requirement is for the mountain, not the safari. Kilimanjaro requires good cardiovascular fitness and 8 to 12 weeks of aerobic preparation. The safari is physically passive — you sit in a vehicle. The combination as a whole is accessible to any trekker who is fit enough to climb Kilimanjaro.

Can I book both legs with Safaribando?

Yes — we manage both legs as a single booking. One point of contact, one payment schedule, one team that coordinates the mountain crew and the safari guide. This eliminates the coordination risk of booking the mountain with one operator and the safari with another, where schedule changes on either side can cascade into logistics problems.

What if I do not reach the summit — does the safari still happen?

Yes. The safari is not conditional on a summit. If you turn around at high altitude for safety or medical reasons, the descent and rest schedule adjusts and the safari begins as planned. We build flexibility into the rest-day buffer between the mountain and safari specifically to accommodate descent timing variations.
