Lake Burunge Tented Camp β Gateway to Tarangire in the Wildlife Corridor
Lake Burunge Tented Camp sits on the shores of Lake Burunge β the evaporation pan into which the Tarangire River flows β in the Burunge Wildlife Management Area, just 10 minutes from Tarangire National Park's Sangaiwe entrance gate. The camp is operated by Tanganyika Wilderness Camps (TWC) and occupies a strategic position in the natural wildlife corridor between Lake Manyara National Park to the north and Tarangire to the south. This corridor sees seasonal wildlife movement that brings the migration spectacle directly to the camp's lakeside location.
The main lodge is built on an elegant elevated wooden platform above the lakeshore, its deck and restaurant offering unobstructed views across Lake Burunge and into the park beyond. At sunset, the combination of migrating birds, drinking wildlife and the golden light on the water makes this one of the most photographed viewpoints on the Northern Circuit. A swimming pool and evening campfire complete the social facilities.
Accommodation
Thirty rooms are split between 20 luxury tents on raised wooden platforms in a shady acacia grove, and 10 lodge bungalows. The tents have private terraces with lake views, en-suite bathrooms with shower and flush toilet, solar electricity 24 hours, and comfortable wooden furniture. Family tents (6 in total) connect two tent rooms to accommodate families of up to 4. The bungalows are more solid structures suitable for guests preferring harder walls. All rooms face toward Lake Burunge and the Tarangire landscape.
Activities
Game drives into Tarangire National Park through the Sangaiwe Gate (10 minutes) cover the park's extraordinary elephant herds, lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, and the baobab-dotted landscape. Nature walks along the Lake Burunge shoreline reveal waterbirds, small mammals and the seasonal movements of wildlife through the corridor. Cultural visits to nearby villages of the Mbugwe tribe give insight into the local community. Sundowners on a natural kopje above the camp with views over Tarangire and the lake are a popular daily ritual.
Who Is Lake Burunge Best For?
Lake Burunge is the best value overnight option near Tarangire National Park. It suits budget-conscious travellers, families (the lake views and pool appeal to children), group tours needing reliable facilities, and anyone doing the Northern Circuit who wants a comfortable base within 10 minutes of the Tarangire gate without paying premium lodge prices. The wildlife corridor location means elephants and other game often walk through or past the camp.

Lake Burunge is the Northern Circuit's best value Tarangire base. At $150 per person per night, you get lake views, a pool, solid service from TWC, and 10-minute access to one of Tanzania's most underrated national parks. The wildlife corridor location brings the experience directly to camp β elephants walk past tents, waterbirds mass on the lake, and the kopje sundowners are genuinely memorable. The dΓ©cor is modest and the camp is large, but neither matters when the elephant herd is drinking at the lakeshore 50 metres from your tent.β The SafariBando team
