Sossusvlei

The oldest desert on Earth — red dunes, white pans and camel-thorn skeletons in the Namib

Sossusvlei

Quick facts

Wildlife

Sossusvlei sits in the Namib-Naukluft Park in one of the world's most extreme arid environments — yet life persists. Oryx (gemsbok) are seen regularly on the dune slopes, their physiology adapted to survive without drinking in extreme heat. Ostrich are common on the gravel plains. Bat-eared fox, aardwolf and brown hyena inhabit the desert night. Sociable weaver nests decorate the camel-thorn trees. Desert beetles, reptiles (including the remarkable sidewinding adder) and several endemic insect species thrive in the sand. Over 100 bird species recorded in the wider Namib-Naukluft.

Top activities

Dune 45 sunrise climb — the most accessible dune on the access road, popular for sunrise photography along the dune crest ridge. Big Daddy dune climb — the highest dune in the area (~325m above the pan floor), a 45-minute ascent with views across the entire dune sea. Deadvlei walk — the 900-year-old dead camel-thorn trees standing against a blinding white clay pan, the most photographed scene in Namibia. Sossusvlei clay pan exploration — the flooded pan in wet years, the cracked white surface in dry years. Sesriem Canyon walk — a 30-metre deep rock slot 5 km from the camp. Balloon safari at dawn over the Namib dune sea.

About Sossusvlei

The Namib Desert is the world’s oldest — arid for at least 55 million years, possibly 80 million. Its dunes are the product of sand carried by the Orange River from the interior of southern Africa and redistributed by the constant south-easterly wind into the forms that photographers travel from every continent to capture. At Sossusvlei, those dunes reach heights of up to 325 metres above the pan floor, coloured a deep apricot-to-red by iron oxide in the sand grains — a tone that intensifies at the golden extremities of the day and fades to near-white at noon.

The name Sossusvlei means “dead-end marsh” in a combination of Nama and Afrikaans — referring to the clay pan at the dune sea’s terminus where the Tsauchab River occasionally floods in wet years, creating a temporary lake surrounded by the dune walls. In dry years (most years) the pan is a cracked white surface. Either way, it is the visual centrepiece of one of Africa’s most photographed landscapes.

Where is Sossusvlei?

Sossusvlei lies within the Namib-Naukluft National Park in central Namibia, accessed through the Sesriem Gate, 360 km south of Swakopmund and 330 km southwest of Windhoek. The accommodation hub is at Sesriem, 65 km from the Sossusvlei pan itself. Access to the pan is via a 60 km sealed road that enters the dune sea at Sesriem Gate, then becomes sand — requiring a 4WD or the NWR shuttle from the 2WD parking lot.

The three essential experiences

1. Dune 45 at sunrise

Dune 45, named for its position 45 km from Sesriem Gate, is the most climbed dune in the Namib — accessible by standard 2WD car from the gate road and positioned perfectly to catch the sunrise light. The dune crest ridge, photographed from below with the ascending line of climbers against the dawn sky, is one of Namibia’s defining images. The climb takes 30–45 minutes; the descent (running down the steep slip face) takes 5 minutes.

2. Big Daddy

The highest dune accessible to visitors in the Sossusvlei area, Big Daddy rises approximately 325 metres above the Deadvlei pan floor. The 45-minute ascent along the razor-edged crest (stay on the crest — the soft sand on the face is exhausting) delivers a 360-degree view across an ocean of dunes interrupted only by the white pan below and the Naukluft Mountains on the horizon.

3. Deadvlei

A short 4WD drive or 1 km walk from the Sossusvlei pan, Deadvlei (Dead Valley) is a white clay pan surrounded by the highest dunes in the area, studded with the black skeletons of camel-thorn trees that died approximately 900 years ago when the Tsauchab River changed course and the pan dried. The trees are too dry to decompose; they simply stand, carbonised by the sun, against the white clay and the red dunes behind them. It is perhaps the single most photographed natural scene in Namibia — and in person, it is even more extraordinary.

Sesriem Canyon

Five kilometres from the gate, the Sesriem Canyon is a 30-metre deep, 1 km long slot carved by the Tsauchab River through layered conglomerate rock. Named for the six (ses) lengths of rawhide rope (riem) that early settlers needed to lower buckets to the water in the canyon floor, it is a pleasant 30-minute walk and one of the few places in the area where water is sometimes found.

Combine Sossusvlei with…

  • Swakopmund — 5 hours north for the coast and adventure activities.
  • Fish River Canyon — 4–5 hours south; the classic Namibia self-drive circuit.
  • Etosha National Park — 8–9 hours north via Windhoek; the complete Namibia circuit.

Frequently asked questions about Sossusvlei

When does Sossusvlei gate open?

Sesriem Gate opens at sunrise (approximately 05:30–06:00 depending on season) and closes at sunset. Staying inside the park at Sesriem Camp or the concession lodges allows you to enter the gate before non-residents, giving an earlier start at Dune 45.

Do you need a 4WD for Sossusvlei?

The final 5 km to the Sossusvlei pan requires a 4WD. Visitors in 2WD vehicles park at the 2WD car park and take the NWR shuttle (fee applies). Dune 45 is accessible by 2WD on the sealed road.

How early should you arrive at Dune 45?

At the gate when it opens. In peak season (July–August) there can be a queue at the gate before sunrise. Drive directly to Dune 45, photograph from the base while the light is side-lit, climb if you want to, then continue to Sossusvlei and Deadvlei before the heat builds after 10:00.

Best time to visit Sossusvlei

May to September — Dry season / winter (most comfortable, best photography)

The Namib winter (May–September) is the most comfortable visiting window. Daytime temperatures are 20–28°C — warm in the sun but manageable for dune climbing. Nights are cool to cold (5–12°C). The dune photography is excellent year-round but the clear, low-humidity winter air produces the sharpest light and the most dramatic dune shadow play. July and August are peak season — the 4WD shuttle to Sossusvlei fills early and booking is essential.

March to April — Post-summer rains (ephemeral flowers, oryx calves)

Following summer rains, the Namib briefly erupts in colour — ephemeral flowers carpet the gravel plains, oryx and springbok drop calves, and the Sossusvlei pan may hold water, turning a turquoise colour that makes for extraordinary photography. Temperatures are still high (30–38°C) but the post-rain landscape is unique.

November to February — Summer (very hot, fewer visitors)

Summer heat is severe — temperatures can reach 45°C in the dune valleys. Dune climbing becomes impractical after 09:00. However, the extreme heat is partly compensated by the dramatic summer light and the absence of other visitors.

Bottom line: May to September for the best all-round experience. Any visit requires a 04:30 wake-up for sunrise at Dune 45 and Deadvlei.
