Selous Mbuyu Safari Camp โ The Giant Baobab Camp on the Rufiji
Selous Mbuyu Safari Camp takes its name from the giant Mbuyu โ the Swahili word for baobab โ that dominates the camp's public areas and gives the entire property its distinctive character. The sixteen en-suite tents under cooling Makuti (thatch) roofs are arranged around this ancient tree on the banks of the Rufiji River, combining a traditional camping experience with modern comfort. Open game drive vehicles give an unobstructed view across the Nyerere plains.
A January review describes the experience: "We spent 2 nights and near 3 days at the camp. Though it was not the best of seasons to travel (late January) we weren't really deprived on game viewing... The best part was the stay at the camp which gave numerous opportunities of relaxing at our tent and viewing animals as they approached the river to quench their thirst day in and out." The Rufiji River frontage means animals are in constant view from camp.

Selous Mbuyu Safari Camp is the most characterful traditional camp in the Nyerere area โ the giant baobab setting, Makuti-roofed tents and Rufiji River animal access create classic Selous safari atmosphere. Good value for the mid-range and suited to travellers who want traditional, no-frills bush camp character over modern luxury.โ The SafariBando team
