Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces

Africa's most accessible Big Five safari — self-drive or private lodge in South Africa's 19,485 sq km flagship park

Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces

Quick facts

Wildlife

Kruger holds all Big Five — lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and white and black rhino — alongside cheetah, African wild dog, spotted hyena, giraffe, hippo, crocodile, zebra, wildebeest, impala, kudu, nyala, eland and over 140 other mammal species. Over 500 bird species are recorded. The southern third of the park is the richest for predators; the north is less visited and more remote. The private game reserves bordering Kruger (Sabi Sand, Timbavati, Thornybush) offer open-vehicle, off-road drives with higher leopard encounter rates than the main park.

Top activities

Self-drive game drives on Kruger's extensive road network — the most affordable Big Five safari in Africa. Private guided game drives in open vehicles from Kruger camps or private lodges. Night drives from designated rest camps in the park. Bush walks with armed rangers — some of Africa's best, from short 3-hour morning trails to multi-day wilderness trails. Private game reserve safari (Sabi Sand, Timbavati, Thornybush) for off-road driving, night drives and walking. Birdwatching with 500+ species across varied habitats. Sunset drives from private lodges.

About Kruger National Park, Mpumalanga and Limpopo Provinces

Kruger National Park is the starting point for most people’s understanding of what an African safari is. At 19,485 square kilometres — larger than Wales, bigger than Israel — it is one of the largest national parks on the continent and the most visited. It is also, unlike most East African parks, self-drive friendly: 3,000 km of maintained roads, excellent signage, well-stocked camps with fuel and food, and wildlife so abundant and habituated that a first-time visitor in a rented Toyota Corolla can expect to see lion, elephant, giraffe, hippo, crocodile and potentially leopard in a single day.

That accessibility is Kruger’s great democratic achievement. A budget self-drive trip, staying in the national park’s own rest camps, is the most affordable Big Five safari in Africa. The same ecosystem seen from a private lodge in the adjacent Sabi Sand reserve — with off-road drives, night drives and leopard encounters that the public park cannot easily match — is among the most expensive and most rewarding safaris in the world. Both are genuinely outstanding experiences.

Where is Kruger?

The park stretches along South Africa’s border with Mozambique and Zimbabwe in Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces, 360–500 km east of Johannesburg. The main gates are Phabeni and Numbi in the south (closest to Johannesburg, richest for predators), Orpen in the central section, and Phalaborwa and Punda Maria in the north (quieter, drier, better for rare northern species). The nearest airports are Skukuza (inside the park, served by charter flights) and Eastgate/KMIA (Hoedspruit, served by SA Express).

Self-drive Kruger

The park’s public camps — Skukuza, Satara, Letaba, Olifants, Phalaborwa, Berg-en-Dal and many more — offer bungalow and chalet accommodation at South African National Parks (SANParks) rates, which are a fraction of private lodge costs. Booking through sanparks.org is essential and popular camps book out months ahead in peak season.

Self-drive tips: enter at first light (06:00 in winter), drive slowly on tar roads, stop at waterholes and river bridges for 15–30 minutes each, and exit the park or return to camp by the gate closing time (around 17:30–18:30 depending on season).

Private reserves adjacent to Kruger

The park’s western boundary is unfenced with a series of private game reserves — Sabi Sand (the most famous, with extraordinary leopard encounter rates), Timbavati, Thornybush and others. These reserves share the same wildlife as Kruger but offer:

  • Off-road driving in open vehicles — allowing you to follow animals off the track into the bush.
  • Night drives — not permitted in the public park.
  • Maximum 8–10 vehicles per sighting (vs potentially unlimited in the public park).
  • Guided bush walks as part of the standard programme.

Wildlife highlights

Kruger has all Big Five in substantial numbers. The leopard of the Sabi Sand and Kruger south are arguably the most photographed wild leopards in the world — habituated to vehicles over generations and reliably visible in the riverine forests along the Sand and Sabie rivers. African wild dog range throughout the park; the cheetah are best found on the open plains of the central Kruger around Satara. White rhino are reliably seen in the south; black rhino are present but shy.

Combine Kruger with…

  • Cape Town — a 2-hour domestic flight; the classic South Africa combination.
  • The Drakensberg Mountains — escarpment hiking and Blyde River Canyon en route between Johannesburg and the park.
  • Tanzania Northern Circuit — a South Africa and Tanzania combined safari flies well.

Frequently asked questions about Kruger

Can you self-drive Kruger safely?

Yes — self-driving is completely standard and safe if you follow the park’s basic rules: never leave your vehicle (except at designated picnic spots and camps), stick to the speed limit (50 km/h on tar, 40 km/h on gravel), and be out of the bush by gate closing time.

What is the best camp in Kruger?

For predators: Satara (central, Kruger’s best lion territory) or Skukuza (south, near the Sabie River leopard habitat). For elephants: Letaba or Olifants in the north. For general location: Lower Sabie (south, river views and good wildlife variety).

Is Kruger or the Masai Mara better?

Different experiences. Kruger has more species diversity, self-drive accessibility and year-round Big Five. The Mara has the Great Migration and is better for large lion pride sightings. Both are extraordinary; they are not competing products.

Best time to visit Kruger National Park

May to September — Dry season (best game viewing)

The South African winter (May–September) is the classic Kruger safari window. Vegetation drops away as the mopane and acacia shed leaves, opening views to 100+ metres in all directions. Wildlife concentrates at the permanent waterholes — the Olifants, Sabie and Letaba rivers become the focus of animal activity. Predator sightings are most reliable. Temperatures are mild (20–27°C by day, cool at night). July and August are peak season — public rest camps book out months ahead.

October to November — Green season beginning (wild dog denning, new calves)

The first rains arrive in October–November and the bush begins greening. This is African wild dog denning season — one of the best windows for finding dogs at a fixed location. New-born impala and other antelopes attract predator activity. Temperatures rise (30–35°C) and afternoon thunderstorms are common.

December to March — Summer/wet season (birding peak, lush landscapes)

The bush is green, dense and beautiful. Migratory birds are present from October through March — adding over 200 additional species to the park’s year-round list. Game viewing is harder in dense vegetation but elephant and buffalo remain reliably visible at open waterholes. Temperatures are high (33–40°C) and afternoon storms are daily. Lodge rates drop significantly.

Bottom line: May to September for the best overall game viewing. October and November for wild dogs and new calves. December to March for birding and green-season rates.
