Robben Island, Western Cape

Where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years — and where apartheid's resistance story is told

Robben Island, Western Cape

Quick facts

Wildlife

Robben Island is home to a large African penguin colony — one of the most accessible breeding colonies in South Africa, viewable from the tour road around the island. African penguin (endangered) nest here year-round. The surrounding waters hold Cape fur seal, African black oystercatcher, kelp gull and various tern species. Southern right whale is occasionally visible from the island's shore between June and December. The island's fynbos habitat supports a small endemic species community including the blue crane (South Africa's national bird) on the grassland areas.

Top activities

Guided tour of the Maximum Security Prison — Robben Island Museum manages all tours. Guides are former political prisoners who spent years in the cells they now show visitors. Nelson Mandela's cell (Block B, Cell 5) visit — the 2x2.5m space where Mandela slept for 18 years. Lime quarry where prisoners worked — where Mandela lost partial eyesight from the glare reflected off white limestone. Panoramic view of Cape Town and Table Mountain from the island's northern shore. African penguin colony observation. Return ferry crossing with Table Mountain views.

About Robben Island, Western Cape

On a clear Cape Town morning, Robben Island is visible from the V&A Waterfront — a flat, low smudge of green on the blue water of Table Bay, 11 km from shore. That proximity is part of its particular cruelty: the prisoners of the island’s maximum-security facility could see the city, could see Table Mountain change its tablecloth of cloud across the seasons, could hear the ship horns from the harbour. They were hidden in plain sight.

Nelson Mandela spent 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment on Robben Island, from 1964 to 1982, in a cell measuring 2 by 2.5 metres. The island had been a place of exile and imprisonment since the 17th century — Dutch colonial authorities used it for political prisoners, lepers and the mentally ill. Its most significant period, however, is the apartheid era: the maximum-security prison that held Mandela, Walter Sisulu, Ahmed Kathrada and hundreds of other political prisoners from the 1960s to the 1990s.

Getting there

Ferries depart from the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town. The crossing takes 30 minutes each way. Multiple departures run daily, weather permitting. All tickets must be booked in advance through Robben Island Museum (robben-island.org.za) — the island sells out weeks ahead in peak season and walk-up tickets are rarely available in summer.

The tour

All island visitors receive a guided tour. The guide programme is managed by the Robben Island Museum and the former prisoner community — your guide may be someone who was incarcerated here. That directness — being shown a solitary confinement cell by the person who was locked in it — gives the tour a moral weight that no conventional museum can replicate.

The tour covers:

  • The Maximum Security Prison — the cell blocks, the exercise yard, the isolation section.
  • Nelson Mandela’s cell (Block B, Cell 5) — 4.5 square metres in which Mandela slept on a mat on the concrete floor for 18 years. The narrow window. The single shelf. The dimensions that take a moment to absorb.
  • The lime quarry — where prisoners performed hard labour crushing limestone. Mandela and others lost partial eyesight from the glare off the white stone; prisoners were not permitted sunglasses for years.
  • The African penguin colony — a large breeding population visible from the tour road.

Historical context

Mandela was convicted in the Rivonia Trial in 1964 — charged, alongside seven others, with sabotage and conspiracy to overthrow the apartheid government. He famously used his statement from the dock to argue the case for a non-racial South Africa, concluding with: “It is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” He was not executed. He was imprisoned instead, and eventually became South Africa’s first democratically elected president in 1994 — 30 years after his incarceration began.

Combine Robben Island with…

  • Cape Town — all visits to the island originate from Cape Town; plan it as a half-day within a wider Cape Town itinerary.
  • District Six Museum — the companion apartheid-history site in Cape Town covering forced removals from the city’s most mixed neighbourhood.

Frequently asked questions about Robben Island

Approximately 3.5 hours door-to-door from the V&A Waterfront: 30 minutes each way on the ferry, 2.5 hours on the island for the full tour.

Can children visit Robben Island?

Yes — there is no age restriction. The content is heavy history; parents should consider whether their children are ready for a frank discussion of imprisonment, political violence and apartheid.

Best time to visit Robben Island

November to March — Summer (most ferries, best weather)

The Cape summer is the most reliable period for ferry crossings. Table Bay is at its calmest in summer, and the ferry runs multiple departures daily. The island tour itself is outdoors in parts — the island is windy even in summer, so a light jacket is always recommended.

Year-round — The historical experience is not seasonal

The prison tour, Mandela’s cell and the historical context of the island are equally powerful in any season. The penguin colony is active year-round. Winter crossings (June–August) can be rough in heavy Southeaster conditions — check sea state with the ferry operator before booking.

Bottom line: Visit whenever you are in Cape Town. Book ahead — the Robben Island ferries sell out weeks in advance in peak season.
