Dodoma

Tanzania's capital in the red-earth heartland — parliament, rock art and Gaddafi's mosque

Dodoma

Quick facts

Wildlife

Dodoma is a dry inland city with limited urban wildlife. The rocky kopjes around the city support rock hyrax, monitor lizard, and birds of prey including augur buzzard and pale chanting goshawk. Lion Rock (Chimwaga Hill), a distinctive inselberg visible from the city, has hiking trails and panoramic views. The Kondoa Irangi rock art sites (2 hours north) are surrounded by miombo woodland holding impala, dik-dik and baboon. Ruaha National Park (3 hours south) provides the closest Big Five safari access from Dodoma.

Top activities

Parliament Buildings guided tour — Tanzania's legislative capital moved from Dar es Salaam to Dodoma beginning in 1996; guided tours of the parliament complex are available when parliament is not in session. Lion Rock (Chimwaga Hill) hike — a 2-hour ascent with views over the dry central plateau. Kondoa Irangi UNESCO rock art day trip (2 hours north) — over 150 San rock art sites in the Kondoa hills, some of the finest in East Africa. Dodoma wine tasting — central Tanzania is an emerging wine region; the Tanganyika Winery and local cooperatives produce table wine from the dry interior climate. Dodoma Cathedral and Gaddafi Mosque visit.

About Dodoma

Dodoma is Tanzania’s official capital — designated as such in 1973 by Julius Nyerere, who wanted to shift the country’s administrative centre from the coast to the geographic heart of the nation. The move has been gradual (Parliament relocated in 1996; most government ministries have followed slowly), and Dar es Salaam retains the commercial dominance. But Dodoma is growing rapidly, driven by the political establishment and the National University of Dodoma, and the dry central plateau city is increasingly a destination in its own right.

Most visitors to Dodoma come for one of two reasons: official business with the Tanzanian government, or access to the extraordinary Kondoa Irangi rock art sites two hours to the north.

Kondoa Irangi Rock Art UNESCO Site

Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2006, the Kondoa Irangi hills contain one of the finest concentrations of San Bushman rock art in East Africa — over 150 documented sites with paintings spanning at least 50,000 years of human artistic activity. The paintings depict animals, humans, spirit figures and abstract forms in red and white ochre, in a style distinct from both the Matobo Hills engravings and the Drakensberg paintings.

The sites are managed through a community heritage programme; local guides from Kondoa district lead all visits. The most accessible sites are a 30–60 minute walk from the main access points, with the finest paintings at Kolo and Mnenia.

Lion Rock

The rocky kopje known as Lion Rock (Chimwaga) rises above the Dodoma plain 4 km from the city centre. A 2-hour return hike through scrub bush leads to a panoramic summit with 360-degree views over the red earth of the central plateau. The rock hyrax colonies on the granite outcrops are entertaining at rest stops. Best completed before 08:00 to avoid the midday heat.

Tanzanian wine

Dodoma is the unlikely centre of Tanzania’s wine industry. The central plateau’s dry climate, well-drained red soils and significant temperature differential between day and night create conditions suitable for viticulture. The Tanganyika Winery and several community cooperatives produce red and white table wines from local grape varieties. The quality is improving and the novelty of Tanzanian wine is worth experiencing for the story if nothing else.

Combine Dodoma with…

  • Kondoa Irangi UNESCO rock art — always; this is the primary reason to visit Dodoma.
  • Ruaha National Park — 3 hours southwest for Tanzania’s finest lion country.
  • Dar es Salaam — 6 hours east by road or 1 hour by air.

Frequently asked questions about Dodoma

Is Dodoma Tanzania's real capital?

Officially yes since 1973 (designated capital) and increasingly in practice as government functions relocate from Dar. Tanzania is unusual in having both a de facto commercial capital (Dar es Salaam) and an official designated capital (Dodoma) in simultaneous operation.

How far is Kondoa Irangi from Dodoma?

Approximately 160 km north on the A104 highway, taking about 2 hours by road.

Best time to visit Dodoma

June to October — Dry season (best for hiking and Kondoa rock art)

Dodoma’s dry season (June–October) is the most comfortable visiting period. The central plateau is hot but dry (25–33°C) and the Lion Rock hike is most pleasant in the early morning. The road to Kondoa is in its best condition. The rock art sites are accessible year-round but the paths around them are easiest in dry conditions.

November to March — Rains and grape harvest

Dodoma receives most of its annual rainfall between November and March. The central plateau greens briefly. Grape harvest in the Dodoma wine region typically falls in February–March — an interesting time to visit the winery.

Bottom line: June to October for hiking and Kondoa. February to March for wine harvest if that interests you.
