3-Day Murchison Falls Big Five Safari with Rhino Tracking

Overview

Murchison Falls is a dramatic waterfall on the Nile. At the top, the river forces its way through a gap in the rocks only 7 metres wide before tumbling 43 metres and flowing westward into Lake Albert. Murchison Falls National Park holds the African big four, lion, leopard, elephant and Cape buffalo, and this itinerary completes the Big Five with a stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to track the white rhino reintroduced there.

Travellers who want chimpanzee trekking added to this same park should look at our 4-Day Murchison Falls and Chimpanzee Trekking, while those who want a more relaxed pace with an extra rafting stop in Jinja can choose our 5-Day Jinja Adventure and Murchison Falls National Park.

Tour Highlights

  • A stop at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary to track white rhino, completing the Big Five alongside Murchison's resident big four
  • Views from both the top and bottom of Murchison Falls, where the Nile crashes through a narrow gorge
  • A sunrise game drive across the Nyamsika plateau for buffalo, giraffe, kob and large carnivores
  • A boat cruise on the Victoria Nile up to the base of the falls, with hippo, crocodile and the rare shoebill stork
  • A short, focused 3-day itinerary that fits easily into a wider Uganda trip

Frequently asked questions

Will I definitely complete the Big Five on this safari?

Lion, leopard, elephant and buffalo are all regularly seen in Murchison Falls National Park, and the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary stop gives a strong chance of seeing white rhino, since the population there is closely monitored and tracked daily. As with any wildlife safari, no individual sighting can be guaranteed, but the odds across this itinerary are good.

How fit do I need to be for this 3-day trip?

Most of the itinerary is vehicle- or boat-based, with light walking involved in the rhino tracking and the visit to the top of the falls. This trip suits most fitness levels.

When is the best time of year for this safari?

The dry seasons, from December to February and June to September, offer the easiest road conditions and the best game viewing as animals concentrate around remaining water sources. The wetter months bring lush scenery but can make some roads harder going.

What's included in the price?

The price covers park fees for non-residents, all activities unless labelled as optional, all accommodation unless listed as an upgrade, a professional driver-guide, all transportation unless labelled as optional, all taxes and VAT, and the meals and drinking water specified in the day-by-day itinerary. International flights, roundtrip airport transfers, additional accommodation before or after the tour, tips and personal items such as souvenirs, travel insurance and visa fees are not included.

Can chimpanzee trekking be added to this itinerary?

Yes, our 4-Day Murchison Falls and Chimpanzee Trekking itinerary adds a trek in nearby Budongo Forest onto a very similar Murchison Falls route. Let us know if you'd like this built into your trip.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Uganda tourist visa online before travel, and a regional East Africa visa covering Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda is also available. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended for any safari trip.
