7-Day Uganda Safari - Empire of Apes (Gorillas & Chimps)

Overview

At the edge of the Albertine Rift in southwestern Uganda lies the vast and misty Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, stretching over a formation of steep mountains. This ancient forest is home to families of mountain gorillas that you will encounter on this 7-day adventure. The route also brings you into the home of energetic chimpanzees in Kibale Forest and through Queen Elizabeth National Park, widely considered one of the most scenic parks in Uganda.

This itinerary pairs the country’s two great primate experiences, chimpanzee trekking and gorilla trekking, with a full game-viewing stop in between. Travellers short on time should look at our 6-Day Kibale, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi Safari for a more compact version of the same three parks, while those who want to add Murchison Falls to a Uganda trip should consider our 4-Day Murchison Falls and Chimpanzee Trekking.

Tour Highlights

  • Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park, home to the highest concentration of primates in East Africa
  • Game drives and a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park
  • A stop at Ishasha in search of Queen Elizabeth's famous tree-climbing lions
  • Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home to roughly half the world's remaining mountain gorillas
  • A community walk near Bwindi for a closer look at local culture
  • An equator stop on the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking?

Both treks involve walking on uneven, sometimes steep and muddy forest terrain, and the gorilla trek in particular can take anywhere from one to several hours depending on where the gorillas are that day. Reasonable fitness, sturdy closed shoes and trekking poles (available locally) are recommended.

Is there a minimum age for this safari?

Yes, this tour accepts children aged 15 and older, in line with the minimum age set for gorilla trekking permits in Uganda.

When is the best time of year for gorilla and chimpanzee trekking?

Trekking is possible year-round, but the two dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, offer easier trail conditions. The wetter months can mean muddier, more challenging treks but also fewer visitors on the trails.

How are gorilla and chimpanzee permits handled?

One gorilla permit and one chimpanzee permit per person, both at non-resident rates, are included in the tour price. These are booked well in advance, since daily permit numbers are limited, so early booking is strongly recommended.

What's included in the price?

The price covers park fees for non-residents, one gorilla permit and one chimpanzee permit per person, all activities unless labelled as optional, all accommodation unless listed as an upgrade, a professional driver-guide, all transportation unless labelled as optional, all taxes and VAT, and the meals and drinks specified in the day-by-day itinerary. International flights, roundtrip airport transfers, additional accommodation before or after the tour, tips and personal items such as souvenirs, travel insurance and visa fees are not included.

Are tree-climbing lions guaranteed at Ishasha?

No sighting can be guaranteed, since the lions move freely through the sector and don't climb trees every day. The stop is included because Ishasha is one of the few places in Africa where this behaviour is regularly observed, but it should be seen as a strong possibility rather than a certainty.

Can this itinerary be combined with a Rwanda or Tanzania extension?

Yes. Uganda connects easily by air to both Kigali and the Tanzania safari circuits, so this itinerary can be extended with gorilla trekking in Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park or a safari extension in northern Tanzania. Let us know if you'd like this built into your trip.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Uganda tourist visa online before travel, and a regional East Africa visa covering Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda is also available. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended given the remote forest terrain involved in trekking.
