8-Day Gorilla Trekking and Nile Rafting Safari, Jinja

Overview

This 8-day Uganda safari combines the country’s signature primate trekking with one of East Africa’s best-known adventure activities. The route opens with chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest National Park, continues into Queen Elizabeth National Park for big game viewing and a boat trip on the Kazinga Channel, and reaches its highlight with gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park. The final days bring a change of pace entirely, with a stop near the Source of the Nile for a half-day of white-water rafting in Jinja before returning to Entebbe.

Travellers who want the primate trekking without the rafting extension should look at our 7-Day Empire of Apes Safari or 6-Day Kibale, Queen Elizabeth and Bwindi Safari, both covering the same three core parks.

Tour Highlights

  • Chimpanzee trekking in Kibale Forest, plus an optional Bigodi Swamp walk
  • Game drives and a boat trip on the Kazinga Channel in Queen Elizabeth National Park
  • A stop at Ishasha in search of the park's tree-climbing lions
  • Gorilla trekking in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park
  • Half-day white-water rafting on the Nile near Jinja, no experience required
  • A flexible itinerary with several optional add-ons along the way

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for this 8-day trip?

Chimpanzee and gorilla trekking both involve walking on uneven, sometimes steep forest terrain, while the Nile rafting is suitable for first-timers with no previous experience required. Reasonable fitness and sturdy closed shoes are recommended for the trekking days.

Is the white-water rafting suitable for beginners?

Yes, the half-day rafting trip on the Nile is designed to be accessible to first-time rafters, with experienced guides leading every raft. Life jackets and safety briefings are provided before setting out.

How are gorilla and chimpanzee permits handled?

One gorilla permit and one chimpanzee permit per person, both at non-resident rates, are included in the tour price and booked well in advance, since daily permit numbers are limited at both parks.

Are tree-climbing lions guaranteed at Ishasha?

No sighting can be guaranteed, since the lions move freely through the sector and aren't seen in the trees every day. The stop is included because Ishasha is one of the few places in Africa where this behaviour is regularly observed.

What's included in the price?

The price covers park fees for non-residents, one gorilla permit and one chimpanzee permit per person, all activities unless labelled as optional, all accommodation unless listed as an upgrade, a professional driver-guide, all transportation unless labelled as optional, all taxes and VAT, roundtrip airport transfers, and the meals and drinking water specified in the day-by-day itinerary. International flights, additional accommodation before or after the tour, tips and personal items such as souvenirs, travel insurance and visa fees are not included.

Can this itinerary be shortened to skip the rafting?

Yes, the Jinja rafting extension can be dropped to create a more compact primate-focused itinerary similar to our 6-day or 7-day Uganda safaris. Let us know if you'd prefer this option.

Is this safari suitable for families?

The trekking days involve a real physical commitment and the rafting has a minimum age set by the rafting operator, so this itinerary suits families with older children and teenagers better than those with young kids. Let us know the ages of any children travelling so we can advise.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Uganda tourist visa online before travel, and a regional East Africa visa covering Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda is also available. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended given the remote forest terrain and water-based activity involved.
