8-Day Kilimanjaro Climb - Lemosho Route, Full Acclimatization

Overview

This 8-day Lemosho itinerary is the most gradual version of the route we offer, restoring both Shira 1 Camp and Karanga Camp as their own separate nights, the two acclimatization stops that shorter Lemosho itineraries combine or skip. The route starts on the mountain's western side at Londorossi Gate, more remote and arguably more scenic than the southern routes, crossing the wide Shira Plateau before joining the Southern Circuit at Lava Tower and continuing through Barranco, Karanga and Barafu to the summit.

Because this itinerary spreads the climb over more days than our 6-Day Lemosho Route Climb or 7-Day Lemosho Route Climb, it offers a meaningfully higher summit success rate, the trade-off is a longer trip and a higher cost. We'd recommend this version specifically for climbers who want to maximize their odds of reaching Uhuru Peak rather than minimize trip length.

Tour Highlights

  • The most gradual Lemosho itinerary available, with both Shira 1 and Karanga camps included as their own separate nights
  • A higher summit success rate than shorter Lemosho itineraries, thanks to extended acclimatization
  • Cross the wide, high-altitude Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on Earth
  • A full acclimatization day exploring the Shira Plateau before continuing toward Lava Tower
  • Summit Uhuru Peak (5,895m) via Stella Point
  • 2 nights at a hotel in Moshi included, the night before and the night after the climb

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Moshi & Pre-Climb Briefing

Your SafariBando representative meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfers you to your hotel in Moshi, where you can relax and enjoy amenities like a swimming pool and Wi-Fi. In the evening, an experienced manager runs through a full pre-climb briefing to make sure you're prepared for the days ahead.

Distance: Airport transfer, approx. 45 minutes

Activity: Arrival, equipment check and pre-climb briefing

Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi

Meals: Breakfast

Day 2

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

A roughly 3-hour drive from Moshi through villages brings you to Londorossi Gate. The trail then climbs through beautiful rainforest on muddy trails, gaiters and trekking poles are recommended here, gaining 396m over 3 to 4 hours to reach Mti Mkubwa Camp, where temperatures noticeably cool at the higher altitude.

Distance: 3-4 hours walking, 396m elevation gain

Activity: Trek through rainforest to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Accommodation: Mti Mkubwa Camp (tented camp, 2,785m)

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 3

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Leaving the rainforest behind, the trail climbs more steeply, gaining 719m over 4 to 6 hours with widening views as you approach the rim of the Shira Plateau. Temperatures continue dropping as you reach Shira 1 Camp.

Distance: 4-6 hours walking, 719m elevation gain

Activity: Steeper ascent to the rim of the Shira Plateau

Accommodation: Shira 1 Camp (tented camp, 3,504m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4

Shira 1 Camp to Shira Hut

A full-day acclimatization adventure exploring the vast Shira Plateau, one of the highest plateaus on Earth, with gentle walks eastward toward Kibo's peak and across the plateau's meadows. Shira Hut sits at the base of the Lent Hills, offering further acclimatization walk options.

Distance: Full day of gentle walking across the plateau

Activity: Acclimatization day exploring the Shira Plateau

Accommodation: Shira Hut (tented camp, 3,895m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5

Shira Hut to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Today's hike is built around acclimatization, you'll end the day at a similar elevation to where you began. The trail ascends a ridge from the Shira Plateau, passing the Kibo peak junction before continuing southeast toward Lava Tower (also known as Shark's Tooth), then descends to Barranco Camp after passing the second junction leading to Arrow Glacier.

Distance: Full day walking, net elevation change minimal despite the climb to Lava Tower

Activity: Acclimatization hike via Lava Tower, descend to Barranco Camp

Accommodation: Barranco Camp (tented camp, 3,986m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

A steep climb up the Barranco Wall leads into the Karanga Valley, this section joins the Mweka Trail and offers striking views back at your crew's skill navigating the wall. Karanga Camp is a shorter, restful day that gives your body welcome time to adjust to the increasing altitude.

Distance: 4-5 hours walking

Activity: Scramble up the Barranco Wall, trek to Karanga Camp

Accommodation: Karanga Camp (tented camp, 4,034m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 7

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

The ascent continues toward Barafu Camp, completing the Southern Circuit with diverse views of the summit along the way. An early dinner and early rest prepare you for the midnight summit push, this is your last night on the mountain before the final climb.

Distance: 3-4 hours walking

Activity: Trek from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (summit base camp)

Accommodation: Barafu Camp (tented camp, 4,662m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & early Dinner

Day 8

Summit Day – Uhuru Peak & Descent to Mweka Camp

Departing between midnight and 2am, this is the most demanding part of the climb both mentally and physically. The ascent climbs through scree toward Stella Point on the crater rim, often with a magnificent sunrise (faster hikers may catch it from the summit itself), then continues around an hour further on a snow-covered trail to Uhuru Peak (5,895m). After photos and a moment to take in the achievement, you'll descend back through Barafu for lunch and a short rest, then continue down to Mweka Camp. Gaiters and trekking poles are strongly recommended for the loose gravel and volcanic ash underfoot.

Distance: Approx. 12-15 hours total (ascent and descent combined)

Activity: Summit climb to Uhuru Peak, then descent to Mweka Camp

Accommodation: Mweka Camp (tented camp, 3,106m)

Meals: Breakfast (early), Lunch & celebratory Dinner on the mountain

Day 9

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate & Return to Moshi

After breakfast and a farewell ceremony with your mountain crew, the descent to Mweka Gate takes 3 to 4 hours through warmer, wetter and steeper terrain than you've seen since the lower mountain, gaiters and trekking poles remain useful here. You'll receive your summit certificate at the gate before a roughly 30-minute transfer back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-earned hot shower and dinner.

Distance: 3-4 hours walking, plus approx. 30-minute transfer to Moshi

Activity: Descend to Mweka Gate, summit certificate ceremony, transfer to Moshi

Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi (second night)

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch (on the mountain)

Day 10

Departure from Moshi

A leisurely breakfast at the hotel, with checkout by 11am (late checkout may be available for an additional fee), before your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport for your departing flight.

Distance: Airport transfer, approx. 45 minutes

Frequently asked questions

Why choose this 8-day version over the 6 or 7-day Lemosho itineraries?

This 8-day itinerary restores both Shira 1 Camp and Karanga Camp as their own separate nights, the two acclimatization stops that our shorter Lemosho itineraries combine or skip to save time. The extra days give your body more gradual exposure to altitude, which directly translates to a higher summit success rate. If reaching Uhuru Peak matters more to you than trip length, this is the version we'd recommend.

What is the summit success rate on this itinerary?

This 8-day structure, with full acclimatization days built in at both Shira 1 and Karanga, typically achieves summit success in the mid-to-high 90 percent range, among the strongest of any itinerary we offer. No operator can guarantee a summit, individual fitness and how your body handles altitude both play a role, but this version maximizes your realistic chances.

Is the Lemosho Route harder than Machame?

Lemosho and Machame share an identical path from Barranco Camp onward, the Barranco Wall, Karanga, Barafu, and the same summit night via Stella Point. The difference is in the earlier days: Lemosho starts further west at Londorossi Gate and crosses the wide Shira Plateau, generally considered no more physically demanding than Machame's rainforest ascent, while offering more remote, less-trafficked scenery.

What's included in the price?

The price covers two nights at a hotel in Moshi (before and after the climb), all park fees, camping fees, climbing permits and government taxes, a certified English-speaking guide with porters and a cook, all camping equipment including private waterproof four-season tents and a mess tent, all hot meals on the mountain, and safety equipment including a pulse oximeter and emergency oxygen. Personal items, tips for your mountain crew, and travel insurance are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

What should I pack for this climb?

Layering is essential: a moisture-wicking base layer, a fleece or down mid-layer, and a waterproof outer shell for both jacket and trousers. A sleeping bag rated to at least -10°C, a sleeping mat, sturdy worn-in hiking boots, gaiters, trekking poles, a headtorch with spare batteries, and sun protection for high-UV alpine conditions are all important. We provide a detailed personal packing list after booking.

When is the best time to climb Lemosho?

The two main dry windows are late June to October and late December to mid-March, with the most stable weather and clearest views across the Shira Plateau. April, May and November are the rainy seasons, when the lower rainforest sections become significantly muddier underfoot.

What about visas, vaccinations and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO). The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Yellow fever vaccination is only required if you're arriving from a yellow-fever-endemic country. Comprehensive travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and medical evacuation is required for all climbers, we cannot accept bookings without it.

What happens if I get altitude sickness or need to be evacuated on the mountain?

Your guide carries a pulse oximeter and checks oxygen saturation levels at each camp, with this itinerary's extra acclimatization days giving more opportunity to monitor how you're adjusting. Mild altitude symptoms are managed with rest, hydration and, if needed, a controlled descent to a lower camp. For serious cases, porters and guides are trained in stretcher evacuation to the nearest gate, and we can arrange membership with the Flying Doctors Service for air evacuation as part of your booking on request.
