4-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari | Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro

Overview

This 4-day Northern Circuit safari covers three of Tanzania's most rewarding parks on a single overland route from Arusha: Tarangire National Park, the central Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Crater. It's the shortest itinerary that still gives a complete Big Five circuit, with two nights inside the Serengeti for predator coverage and a full crater game drive on the final day. Expect lion, elephant, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and a wide range of birdlife against some of Tanzania's most iconic landscapes, with comfortable lodge accommodation and an expert driver-guide throughout.

Travelers with a fifth day to spare should consider our 5-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari, which follows the same route but adds a second full day inside the Serengeti, the single change that most improves predator sightings. Those with only three days, or who'd rather add Lake Manyara's tree-climbing lions than make the longer drive to the Serengeti, may prefer our 3-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari.

Tour Highlights

  • Three of Tanzania's flagship parks in four days, no internal flights
  • Tarangire's baobab woodlands and large elephant herds
  • Two nights inside the Serengeti — predator-rich Seronera Valley
  • Full crater game drive at Ngorongoro with the highest reliable black rhino sightings in Tanzania
  • Private 4x4 with pop-up roof, TANAPA-certified driver-guide, all park fees included

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arusha to Tarangire National Park

Your SafariBando driver-guide collects you from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi at 07:30 and drives south to Tarangire National Park (around 2.5 hours on tarmac). Tarangire is the dry-season dispersal area for elephants from the wider ecosystem, herds of 30 to 100 animals around the Tarangire River are routine, alongside giraffe, zebra, eland, and the park's signature baobab woodlands. We do a full afternoon game drive along the river circuit with a picnic lunch, then exit the park in the late afternoon and drive 40 minutes to your lodge near Karatu.

Distance: 220 km / approx. 3.5 hours driving plus game drive

Activity: Afternoon game drive in Tarangire

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in the Karatu area

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2

Karatu to the Serengeti via Ngorongoro Highlands

After breakfast we drive west through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, pausing at the crater rim viewpoint for the first sight of the caldera floor, and descend onto the Serengeti plains via Naabi Hill Gate. The drive itself is part of the game viewing: lone bull elephants on the Olduvai short-grass plains, giraffe and zebra along the Naabi access road. We aim to reach the Seronera Valley by mid-afternoon for the day's second game drive. The central Serengeti has the highest leopard density in East Africa and a resident lion population, your guide tracks both species daily.

Distance: 320 km / approx. 6 hours including game drives

Activity: En-route game drive plus afternoon Seronera game drive

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp inside the Serengeti

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3

Serengeti to Ngorongoro Crater rim

An early morning game drive, the best window for predator activity, with lions returning from overnight hunts and leopards still in the open. We continue game viewing through the morning, then break for brunch back at camp before driving east. We exit the park at Naabi Hill, retrace through the highlands, and arrive near the Ngorongoro crater rim or at a lodge in Karatu in the late afternoon. The crater is visible from the rim drive, a 600-metre-deep caldera with its own enclosed ecosystem on the floor.

Optional add-on

  • Hot-air balloon safari over the Serengeti at sunrise (~$650 pp, advance booking required, weather-dependent), taken in place of the morning game drive on Day 3.

Distance: 250 km / approx. 5 hours including morning game drive

Activity: Morning Serengeti game drive

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp near the Ngorongoro crater rim

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4

Ngorongoro Crater game drive – Arusha

Early breakfast at the lodge, then descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a full game drive on the floor. The crater is 260 km² of enclosed grassland, marsh and acacia forest, with a resident black rhino population (20 to 30 animals) that is the most reliable rhino sighting in Tanzania. Lion prides are present on the floor; buffalo herds run into the hundreds; the Lerai Forest hosts the crater's resident elephants. We take a picnic lunch on the floor near the Ngoitokitok hippo pool, then ascend the western rim road in the early afternoon and drive back to Arusha (approximately 3 hours) for evening drop-off at your hotel or Kilimanjaro Airport.

Distance: 200 km / approx. 4 hours driving plus crater game drive

Activity: Full crater floor game drive

Accommodation: N/A, end of safari

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

End of safari.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for this 4-day safari?

This is a vehicle-based safari — no walking is required and no fitness threshold applies. Game drives are conducted from a private 4x4 with a pop-up roof. The longest single drive is the Arusha-to-Serengeti leg on Day 2 (around 6 hours including game drives). Travellers with limited mobility are accommodated; let us know in advance and we'll select lodges with step-free access and brief your guide on any specific needs.

When is the best time of year to do this safari?

June to October is the dry season — short grass, animals concentrated at water sources, the highest sighting reliability of the year. January to February is the southern Serengeti calving season with the largest predator concentrations and significantly fewer tourists. The long rains in April and May can affect lodge access and game-drive comfort but offer the lowest rates of the year. November short rains are brief and manageable. The crater is productive year-round; Tarangire is at its peak in the dry season (June to October) when elephants concentrate along the river.

What animals will we likely see?

On a 4-day Northern Circuit safari you are highly likely to see lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hippo, baboon and a wide range of antelope and birdlife. Black rhino is likely on the Ngorongoro Crater floor (one of the most reliable rhino sightings in Tanzania). Leopard is possible — the Serengeti has the highest leopard density in East Africa, but leopards are solitary and elusive, so sightings depend on guide skill and the day's movements. Cheetah is likely on the Serengeti plains. No operator guarantees specific sightings — wildlife cannot be scheduled.

What's included in the price?

The price covers private 4x4 with pop-up roof, professional English-speaking driver-guide, all national park entry fees (Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Conservation Area, Ngorongoro Crater service fee), full-board accommodation as listed, all meals during the safari, and drinking water in the vehicle. International flights, Tanzania visa, travel insurance, tips for the guide, alcoholic drinks at the lodges and any optional add-ons (balloon safari, cultural visits) are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

Is this safari suitable for children?

Yes — this itinerary accepts children of 5 years and older. Children under 12 receive a discount on park fees per TANAPA policy. The 4x4 has space for a family of four comfortably. Game drives are long days (typically 07:00 to 17:00 with breaks) — bring books, light snacks and patience for younger children. We can adjust the pace and add shorter game-drive days for families with younger children at no extra charge.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Yes. This 4-day itinerary is a popular base that we adapt frequently: adding a Lake Manyara day, swapping Karatu lodges for tented camps inside the Serengeti, extending with a Zanzibar beach segment, or upgrading to luxury accommodation. WhatsApp us with your dates, group size and any preferences and we'll send back a tailored itinerary and quote within 24 hours.

What about visas, vaccinations and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system at eservices.immigration.go.tz before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO). The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Yellow fever vaccination is only required if you are arriving from a yellow-fever-endemic country. Malaria prophylactics are recommended. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is required for all safari participants — we cannot accept bookings without it.

What if something goes wrong on safari?

SafariBando operates from Moshi with our own vehicles and team. If a vehicle has an issue our Arusha operations base dispatches a replacement. If a guide falls ill we have a replacement available from our team in the same region. All vehicles carry a satellite phone for emergencies; lodges have radio contact with the operations base. The Flying Doctors Service covers medical evacuation from any of the parks on this itinerary; we can arrange membership as part of your booking on request.
