7-Day Kilimanjaro Climb - Rongai Route (Mawenzi Tarn)

Overview

This 7-day itinerary takes our 6-Day Rongai Route Climb and adds a detour to Mawenzi Tarn, a small glacial lake camp set directly beneath Mawenzi's jagged eastern face, one of the most dramatic campsites on the entire mountain. Rather than climbing straight from Third Cave across The Saddle to Kibo Hut, this version routes via Kikelewa Camp and then Mawenzi Tarn, adding a genuine extra day of altitude adjustment before the final approach to Kibo.

Because Rongai's terrain doesn't offer the same "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization pattern that routes like Machame or Lemosho build in naturally, this extra day matters more here than it might elsewhere, and the Mawenzi Tarn detour gives a genuine acclimatization benefit rather than just adding distance. If your schedule is tight and you're comfortable with a slightly lower success rate, our 6-Day Rongai Route Climb covers the more direct path to Kibo Hut. Trekkers who'd prefer a more scenic but considerably busier route should consider our 6-Day Machame Route Climb instead.

Tour Highlights

  • Kilimanjaro's only northern approach, drier conditions and fewer climbers than the southern routes
  • A dramatic detour to Mawenzi Tarn, camping beneath Mawenzi's jagged eastern face
  • Genuine wildlife on the lower slopes: antelope, buffalo and occasionally elephant
  • A genuine extra acclimatization day before crossing The Saddle to Kibo Hut
  • Descend via the Marangu Route, with hut accommodation at Horombo on the way down
  • 2 nights at a hotel in Moshi included, the night before and the night after the climb

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Moshi & Pre-Climb Briefing

Your SafariBando representative meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfers you to your hotel in Moshi. In the evening, your mountain guide runs through the route, weather expectations, and a full equipment check, so any missing gear can be rented locally before you set off.

Distance: Airport transfer, approx. 45 minutes

Activity: Arrival, equipment check and pre-climb briefing

Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi

Meals: Dinner

Day 2

Nale Moru Gate to Simba Camp

After breakfast, it's a 4 to 5 hour drive through coffee plantations and villages on the mountain's northern side to Nale Moru Gate. The trail begins gently through forest and cultivated land before opening into moorland, with views across the plains toward Kenya. Simba Camp sits near the first of the route's namesake caves.

Distance: Approx. 8 km, 3-4 hours walking

Activity: Trek through forest and moorland to Simba Camp

Accommodation: Simba Camp (tented camp, 2,650m)

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 3

Simba Camp to Second Cave

A steady, consistent ascent along the moorland path, with views of Kibo's summit dome and glimpses of the eastern crater rim's ice fields on clear days. Vegetation thins progressively as you climb, and temperatures begin to drop noticeably at Second Cave.

Distance: Approx. 8 km, 5-6 hours walking

Activity: Steady ascent through moorland to Second Cave

Accommodation: Second Cave Camp (tented camp, 3,450m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4

Second Cave to Kikelewa Camp

Rather than continuing straight up to Third Cave as the 6-day version does, this itinerary branches east, traversing across moorland and semi-desert terrain toward Mawenzi. Kikelewa Camp sits in a sheltered valley with the last of the route's larger vegetation, giving way to the increasingly stark, dramatic scenery ahead.

Distance: Approx. 10 km, 4-5 hours walking

Activity: Traverse toward Mawenzi to Kikelewa Camp

Accommodation: Kikelewa Camp (tented camp, 3,600m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5

Kikelewa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn

A shorter but steep climb brings you to Mawenzi Tarn, a small glacial lake camp set directly beneath Mawenzi's jagged eastern face, widely considered one of the most dramatic campsites on Kilimanjaro. The terrain and views here are strikingly different from anywhere else on the mountain. With the rest of the afternoon free, an optional short acclimatization walk toward the base of Mawenzi's slopes is available with your guide, weather permitting.

Distance: Approx. 6 km, 3-4 hours walking

Activity: Climb to Mawenzi Tarn, optional acclimatization walk in the afternoon

Accommodation: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (tented camp, 4,330m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 6

Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Hut (crossing The Saddle)

The trail descends slightly from Mawenzi Tarn before crossing The Saddle, the vast, barren high-altitude plain between Mawenzi and Kibo, exposed to sun and wind with little shelter. Kibo Hut, the summit base camp on this side of the mountain, sits at the foot of the final ascent, where this route joins the Marangu Route. Equipment is laid out and checked, an early dinner is served, and the group aims to be asleep by around 19:00 ahead of a midnight start.

Distance: Approx. 9 km, 4-5 hours walking

Activity: Cross The Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to Kibo Hut, join the Marangu Route

Accommodation: Kibo Hut (dormitory, 4,700m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & early Dinner

Day 7

Summit Day – Uhuru Peak via Gilman's Point & Descent to Horombo Hut

Your guide wakes the group between midnight and 2am for the summit attempt, the most demanding stretch of the climb both physically and mentally. The trail climbs steep scree to Gilman's Point on the crater rim, then continues around an hour further across snow-covered ground to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), usually reached around sunrise. After photos and time to take in the achievement, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a late breakfast and short rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for the night, gaiters and trekking poles are particularly useful on the loose volcanic ash of this descent.

Distance: Approx. 6 km ascent, 15 km descent, 10-13 hours total

Activity: Summit climb to Uhuru Peak via Gilman's Point, then descent to Horombo Hut

Accommodation: Horombo Hut (dormitory, 3,720m)

Meals: Breakfast (early), Lunch, Dinner

Day 8

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate & Return to Moshi

After breakfast and a farewell ceremony with your mountain crew, you descend through moorland and forest to Marangu Gate, stopping at Mandara Hut for lunch along the way. Tipping your guides, cooks and porters at the gate is customary, your guide can advise on appropriate amounts. You'll receive your summit certificate (Gilman's Point or Uhuru Peak certificates are issued depending on your highest point reached) before transferring back to your hotel in Moshi.

Distance: Approx. 20 km, 5-6 hours walking, plus transfer to Moshi

Activity: Descend to Marangu Gate, summit certificate ceremony, transfer to Moshi

Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi (second night)

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch (on the mountain)

Day 9

Departure from Moshi

After breakfast, you're free until your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your onward flight. If you'd rather not end the trip on the mountain, this is also the natural point to roll straight into a Northern Circuit safari, many climbers combine this climb with our 4-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari to Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro for a full climb-and-safari trip.

Distance: Airport transfer, approx. 45 minutes (or onward to your next safari)

Activity: Free morning, then departure transfer or onward safari

Accommodation: N/A, end of Kilimanjaro programme

Meals: Breakfast

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be to climb Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route's Mawenzi Tarn variation?

No technical climbing skills are required, and Rongai's gradient on the way up is one of the gentler ones on the mountain day to day. Day 5 (Kikelewa to Mawenzi Tarn) is short but includes a steeper climb than earlier days. Summit night (Day 7) remains the most demanding stretch regardless of route, a continuous 10 to 13 hour effort at altitude. Several months of regular cardio and hiking with a loaded daypack are recommended before you travel.

Why is the Mawenzi Tarn detour worth the extra day?

Most Kilimanjaro routes use a 'climb high, sleep low' pattern to help the body adjust to altitude gradually, something Rongai's more direct profile doesn't naturally offer. Routing via Kikelewa Camp and Mawenzi Tarn adds a genuine extra day of altitude adjustment before the final push to Kibo Hut and the summit, rather than just adding distance for its own sake. It's also one of the most dramatic camps on the mountain, set directly beneath Mawenzi's jagged eastern face, a landscape you won't see from any other route or itinerary.

What is the summit success rate on this 7-day Rongai Route?

The extra acclimatization day via Mawenzi Tarn is the single biggest factor that improves your chances compared with the more direct 6-day version of this route. Industry-wide, 7-day Rongai itineraries with this extra day typically perform comparably to other well-acclimatized 7-day routes, in the low-to-mid 90 percent range, against a somewhat lower rate on the 6-day version, though individual fitness, pace and how your body handles altitude all play a role and no operator can guarantee a summit.

What's included in the price?

The price covers two nights at a hotel in Moshi (before and after the climb), all park fees, camping and hut fees, and rescue fees, a certified English-speaking guide with the required number of porters and a cook, all camping equipment for the ascent (private tents and a mess tent), all meals on the mountain, and safety equipment including a pulse oximeter and emergency oxygen. International flights, Tanzania visa, travel insurance, alcoholic drinks, tips for the mountain crew and any optional add-ons are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

What wildlife might we see on the lower slopes?

The Rongai Route's forest and moorland sections on Days 2 and 3 pass through habitat where antelope and buffalo sightings are fairly common, and elephant are present in the area though sightings are less predictable. This is one of the route's distinctive features compared with the busier southern approaches.

How does this compare to the 6-day Rongai Route?

The first three days are identical: Nale Moru Gate to Simba Camp, then Simba to Second Cave. From Second Cave, the 6-day version continues directly to Third Cave and then crosses The Saddle to Kibo Hut. This 7-day version instead branches toward Mawenzi, with a day to Kikelewa Camp, a day to Mawenzi Tarn, and then crosses The Saddle to Kibo Hut from there. Both versions then share the same summit night and Marangu Route descent. The extra day buys you genuinely better acclimatization and one of the mountain's most dramatic campsites.

What about visas, vaccinations and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO). The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Yellow fever vaccination is only required if you're arriving from a yellow-fever-endemic country. Malaria prophylactics are recommended for your time at lower altitudes around Moshi. Comprehensive travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and medical evacuation is required for all climbers, we cannot accept bookings without it.

What happens if I get altitude sickness or need to be evacuated on the mountain?

Your guide carries a pulse oximeter and checks oxygen saturation levels at each camp, along with emergency oxygen for serious cases. Mild altitude symptoms are managed with rest, hydration and, if needed, a controlled descent to a lower camp. For serious cases, porters and guides are trained in stretcher evacuation, and we can arrange membership with the Flying Doctors Service for air evacuation as part of your booking on request.
