Ecoscience Science Center & Luxury Lodge — Where Safari Meets Volcanology

Ecoscience Science Center and Luxury Lodge is one of the most genuinely unusual properties near Tarangire National Park. The lodge was founded by a Spanish professor of geology and volcanology, and on the same 80-hectare property sits an active scientific research centre focused on volcanology and conservation in northern Tanzania. University students and researchers use the science centre for workshops, lectures and field work; safari guests stay in the adjacent luxury lodge and are warmly invited to join scientists for talks, presentations and discussions about the landscape they are driving through. It is an optional but remarkable addition to any Tarangire stay.

The property is positioned on the northeastern border of Tarangire National Park, 20 kilometres south of Makuyuni village. The 80 hectares adjoin an elephant migration route, and the waterhole in front of the lodge is a daily attraction — elephants, zebra, giraffe and other wildlife come to drink, often within 40-50 feet of the dining terrace. The lodge is designed in a style that blends Spanish architecture with Maasai hut influences: spacious, high-ceilinged rooms with large furnished terraces, solar-powered throughout.

Accommodation

Six spacious luxury rooms, each 60 square metres with an additional 30 square metre terrace. Every room has a double bed, wardrobe, office desk, comfortable couch and en-suite bathroom. Terraces face the valley towards Radilen Hill and the Tarangire landscape. From the terrace, elephant families can sometimes be seen moving through the landscape below. Solar panels power the entire property — no generator noise. WiFi is available in the science centre building. Walking around the property after dark requires a Maasai guard escort — the lodge is in a wildlife area and animals pass through.
