Greystoke Mahale — The World's Most Extraordinary Remote Luxury Camp
Greystoke Mahale, operated by Nomad Tanzania, is consistently described as one of the world's finest and most extraordinary safari camps. Strung along Kangwena Beach on the edge of Lake Tanganyika in Mahale Mountains National Park, with the forested peaks rising dramatically behind, the camp's six open-fronted bandas have been built using reclaimed dhows from the lake shore — each with its own unique character and stunning lake and mountain outlook.
This is as remote as you can get in western Tanzania — no roads, no vehicles, no other camps visible from the beach. Daily chimpanzee trekking in the Mahale Mountains forest is the principal activity — guests spend an hour with the habituated Mahale chimp community, one of Africa's best and most studied populations. After trekking, return to the beach to swim in the crystal-clear Lake Tanganyika (no bilharzia), kayak, snorkel or watch the sunset from the dhow. Pelicans, storks and fish eagles are frequent. 2026 rates from $1,125 pppn low season to $2,365 pppn high. Minimum age 8. Closed mid-March to end May.

Greystoke Mahale is among the top five safari camps in Africa — the dhow-built beach bandas, chimpanzee trekking in the Mahale Mountains, crystal-clear Lake Tanganyika swimming and complete isolation from the modern world create an experience without parallel. The price is significant but the experience is genuinely irreplaceable. Often combined with Chada Katavi for the definitive western Tanzania circuit.— The SafariBando team
