Nkungwe Luxury Tented Camp — Mahale's Value-Focused Lake Tanganyika Shore Camp

Nkungwe Luxury Tented Camp (also known as Nkungwe Beach Lodge or Kungwe) is on the shore of Lake Tanganyika in Mahale Mountains National Park — the remote western Tanzania park famous for chimpanzee trekking. Tanzania Odyssey calls it "our second choice lodge in Mahale Mountain National Park after the famous Greystoke just next door — we like Nkungwe for its simplicity, location on the shore of Lake Tanganyika and value."

The eight tented rooms are set back on the beach edge into the undergrowth, raised on wooden platforms with en-suite bathrooms and spacious interiors. The main area is on wooden decking with a large Makuti thatched roof overlooking the lake. Guests trek the same Mahale chimpanzee clan as Greystoke guests (with staggered visit times to avoid crowding). Fresh lake fish is a dining highlight. No roads or vehicles exist inside Mahale National Park — access is by chartered light aircraft to Mahale Airstrip, then a boat transfer down Lake Tanganyika to camp. Charters operate Tuesday and Thursday from Arusha. Best combined with Katawi NP for a western Tanzania circuit.
