Kitela Lodge โ Coffee Plantation Luxury in the Ngorongoro Highlands
Kitela Lodge is a Tanganyika Wilderness Camps (TWC) property on a hillside above a working coffee plantation in the Ngorongoro Highlands near Karatu, ranked #5 of 58 specialty lodges in the Karatu area on TripAdvisor. Set on an elevated site with views across the coffee farm rows to the eastern face of the Ngorongoro Crater, it is a distinctly characterful Karatu option โ more intimate and stylish than the larger corporate lodges along the Northern Circuit corridor.
The lodge is positioned on the hillside above a waterfall โ a setting that gives it a cool, forested atmosphere unlike the open savannah camps to the east. The chalet rooms are designed as a refined African country villa, with claw-foot bathtubs among the most distinctive features. The rate at Kitela is generous: full board including water, soft drinks and house wines is included, which few Karatu lodges match at the same price point.
Accommodation
Twenty chalet-style rooms are set within manicured gardens on the hillside, each opening onto private terraces or balconies overlooking the coffee plantation and Ngorongoro highlands. Interiors combine modern African style with country villa elegance โ claw-foot bathtubs (en-suite with separate shower), premium bedding, mosquito nets, and in-room tea and coffee. The communal lounge and dining deck are elevated to maximise highland views. A swimming pool, massage and spa cabin, and garden terraces complete the leisure facilities. An afternoon coffee walk across the estate is offered as a complimentary daily activity โ a gentle introduction to the plantation life that surrounds the lodge.
Activities
Guided coffee farm walks on the estate. Game drives to Ngorongoro Crater (45 minutes), Lake Manyara (30 minutes), Lake Eyasi (1 hour for Hadzabe cultural visits) and Tarangire (2 hours). Cultural visits to Iraqw and Maasai communities. Walking safaris in the NCA forest. Guided walks from nearby Tloma Lodge include waterfall and Empakai Crater routes.
Who Is Kitela Best For?
Kitela is the best mid-range lodge in Karatu for couples and travellers who want character, claw-foot baths and a distinctive setting without paying the full luxury prices of Gibb's Farm or Elewana's Manor. The plantation hillside, waterfall backdrop and TWC service quality create a genuinely memorable Northern Circuit base. The all-in rate (including house wines) is excellent value compared to properties charging separately for drinks. Families are well served by interconnecting room options.

Kitela Lodge is our top recommendation for mid-range Northern Circuit travellers wanting character and style in Karatu. The coffee plantation hillside, waterfall backdrop, claw-foot baths and TWC management create a stay that feels distinctive rather than generic. The all-inclusive rate covering house wines at $344 pppn is genuinely good value for what is delivered. The afternoon coffee walk is a thoughtful complimentary addition. #5 of 58 lodges in Karatu on TripAdvisor consistently reflects the quality.โ The SafariBando team
