Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge — The Conservator's House on the Crater Rim

Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge occupies a unique historical position: the lodge was originally the home of Ngorongoro Conservation Area's first conservator, and its developers have intentionally maintained the house's original rustic, low-impact character rather than replacing it with a purpose-built hotel. Set on the crater rim with forest views, it is described as the only genuinely budget lodge within the Ngorongoro Conservation Area — and it is the first lodge guests encounter entering the NCA from Arusha.

The lodge is small, characterful and honest. Twenty-four rooms with en-suite bathrooms, hot showers, wood-burning stoves (for warmth at 7,500 feet) and verandas overlooking the dense forest. Two campfires where guests gather in the evenings to exchange safari stories. A well-stocked bar and large dining room with generous African-inspired meals. The atmosphere is closer to a comfortable forest camp than a hotel.

Accommodation

Twenty-four rooms in the original conservator's compound, each with en-suite bathroom with hot shower, wood-burning stove, private veranda with forest views and mosquito netting. Rooms are simple — functional rather than luxurious — but clean and well-maintained according to most reviews. An optional third bed can be added. Hot water bottles are provided on request. The campfire gathering areas and communal lounge create the social heart of the lodge.

Activities

Game drives into the Ngorongoro Crater. Walking safaris in the NCA forest reserve with ranger guides. Maasai village cultural visits. The forest surrounding the lodge is excellent for birdwatching and colobus monkey sightings. The remote crater rim position makes stargazing exceptional on clear nights.
