Roho ya Selous β€” Water, Wild Dogs and Southern Tanzania's Best-Kept Secret

Roho ya Selous β€” the name means "Heart of the Selous" β€” sits on a small peninsula overlooking Lake Nzerakera in the core game-viewing area of Nyerere National Park (formerly the Selous Game Reserve). This is southern Tanzania's great wilderness: a vast, waterlogged landscape of palm-fringed rivers, seasonal lakes, and floodplains that supports one of the most significant African wild dog populations on the continent, along with lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, and over 400 bird species.

What makes Roho ya Selous fundamentally different from the northern Tanzania safari circuit is the presence of water as a defining element. Here, game viewing happens by boat as well as by vehicle. You drift past pods of hippo and basking crocodile on a boat safari along the Rufiji River tributaries, then switch to an open 4x4 for a dawn drive across the dry-season plains. Walking safaris add a third perspective. It is this combination of land, water and foot that gives the Nyerere a safari character that cannot be replicated in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro.

Camp and Accommodation

Roho ya Selous has eight tented suites β€” seven standard and one family β€” each built on a stone platform under shade trees, with stretch-canvas roofs and open sides that allow 180-degree views of the lake and its wildlife. The tents are spacious at approximately 60 square metres, with comfortable beds fitted with an almost-silent Evening Breeze air-conditioning unit (essential in the Nyerere heat), en-suite bathrooms with indoor and outdoor showers, flush toilet, twin basins and complimentary toiletries. A private veranda with deep seating overlooks the water.

The communal area is deliberately simple β€” an elegant stretch-canvas lounge and bar with stone floors, a separate dining tent, and a swimming pool for cooling off during the midday heat. Indoor and outdoor dining areas allow meals to shift with the weather. The simplicity is intentional: in this climate, heavy structures are unnecessary, and the lightness of the design keeps the focus on the landscape.

Activities

Game drives in open 4x4 vehicles are conducted in the early morning when predator activity peaks. Boat safaris on Lake Nzerakera and the Rufiji River system run in the afternoon, offering close encounters with hippo, crocodile, and exceptional waterbird populations β€” including the rare Pel's fishing owl and African fish eagle. Walking safaris are conducted by Asilia guides with a national park ranger (minimum age 16). Catch-and-release fishing for catfish and tiger fish can be arranged. A short night drive after sundowners is possible for leopard and nocturnal species.

Who Is Roho ya Selous Best For?

Roho ya Selous suits experienced safari travellers looking for something genuinely different from the northern Tanzania circuit. If you have already done the Serengeti and Ngorongoro, the Nyerere offers a completely new ecosystem β€” tropical, water-dominated, and with species like wild dog and hippo that define the game-viewing character. It also combines beautifully with Zanzibar (a short flight away) for a bush-and-beach itinerary, or with Ruaha National Park for a comprehensive southern Tanzania circuit.

SafariBando's view

Roho ya Selous is our recommendation for travellers who have done the Serengeti and want something entirely different. The combination of game drives, boat safaris and walking creates the most varied daily activity programme of any Asilia camp. The wild dog sightings alone justify the trip β€” the Nyerere has one of the largest populations in Africa. The climate is hot and humid compared to the northern highlands, and the camp is deliberately simple rather than luxurious, but the Evening Breeze air-conditioning units and swimming pool make it entirely comfortable. Combine it with Zanzibar for one of the best bush-and-beach itineraries in East Africa.
