Tarangire Safari Lodge โ The Original: Established 1985, Still Earning Its Views
Tarangire Safari Lodge has the distinction of being the oldest lodge in Tarangire National Park โ established in 1985 by the same family that still operates it today. Perched on an escarpment ridge 10 kilometres inside the main gate, it commands sweeping views over the Tarangire River and surrounding savannah that are, in the words of GetSafariTours' 2026 guide, "best value with a view" in the entire park.
The lodge is not attempting to compete on luxury with Lemala Mpingo Ridge or Chem Chem. It is a characterful, reliable, family-run property that provides good food, a strong view, excellent wildlife access and the kind of warm staff relationships that come from an operation with decades of continuity. Elephants wander directly below the escarpment โ sometimes between the tents. The Tarangire River draws wildlife in the dry season in concentrations that few other parks anywhere in East Africa can match.
Accommodation and Dining
Individual rooms and tents are positioned along the escarpment ridge, each with en-suite facilities, private terrace and views over the Tarangire River valley. All rooms include basic toiletries, a torch, insect repellent, a whistle and an umbrella. Buffet-style meals feature local produce and a good selection of local beers; children are served earlier in the day. The lodge accommodates special dietary requirements with advance notice. Laundry service is available at additional cost per item.
Activities
Game drives deep into Tarangire National Park โ the park's famous dry-season elephant congregations, lion, cheetah, leopard, giant baobabs and 550+ bird species. Hot-air balloon safaris. Cultural visits to nearby Maasai communities. The escarpment terrace itself provides exceptional passive wildlife watching as herds come to the river below.
Who Is Tarangire Safari Lodge Best For?
The lodge suits independent travellers, budget-to-mid-range visitors and those who appreciate the history and character of the oldest lodge in the park over the polished finishes of newer properties. The escarpment terrace wildlife watching is free and continuous. Families are welcomed with early children's meals and practical family facilities.

Tarangire Safari Lodge is the best-value escarpment view lodge in the park. The 1985 family ownership gives it a warmth and continuity of staff relationships that newer corporate properties cannot replicate โ elephants walking below the terrace while you drink your morning coffee has been happening here for 40 years and remains the centrepiece of the experience. The GetSafariTours 2026 guide calls it the park's "best value with a view" โ we agree. Not glamorous, but deeply characteristic.โ The SafariBando team
