The trek involves walking on uneven, sometimes steep and muddy forest terrain, and can take anywhere from one to several hours depending on the gorillas' location that day. Reasonable fitness, sturdy closed shoes and trekking poles (available locally) are recommended.

One gorilla permit per person, at non-resident rates, is included in the tour price and booked well in advance, since daily permit numbers are limited at Bwindi.
Trekking is possible year-round, but the two dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, offer easier trail conditions. The wetter months can mean muddier treks but fewer visitors on the trails.

Bwindi is in the far southwest corner of Uganda, roughly 8-9 hours by road from Entebbe, since there is no direct flight into the immediate area. The drive itself passes through varied Ugandan scenery and is broken up with stops along the way.
Most nationalities can obtain a Uganda tourist visa online before travel, and a regional East Africa visa covering Uganda, Kenya and Rwanda is also available. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended given the remote forest terrain involved in trekking.
