5-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari - Tarangire, Serengeti & Ngorongoro

Overview

This 5-day lodge safari is built around two full nights inside the Serengeti, the extra time that makes the biggest difference to predator sightings on Tanzania's Northern Circuit. The route starts with a day in Tarangire National Park for its large elephant herds and baobab woodlands, crosses the Ngorongoro Highlands into the Serengeti for two days of game drives around the predator-rich Seronera Valley, then loops back through the Ngorongoro Crater and Lake Manyara on the return to Arusha.

Compared with our 4-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari, which spends a single night in the Serengeti, this extra day inside the park roughly doubles your game-drive time in the area with the highest leopard density in East Africa and a resident lion population that your guide tracks daily. Travelers who want even more time in the Serengeti, particularly during the wildebeest migration, should look at our 6 and 7-day Tanzania Lodge Safari itineraries.

Tour Highlights

  • Two full nights inside the Serengeti, around the predator-rich Seronera Valley
  • Tarangire's large elephant herds and ancient baobab woodlands
  • Full crater floor game drive at Ngorongoro, with strong black rhino sighting chances
  • Lake Manyara's tree-climbing lions, flamingos and groundwater forest on the return leg
  • Private 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof and English-speaking driver-guide throughout
  • Full-board lodge or tented camp accommodation for all 5 days

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arusha / Moshi to Tarangire National Park

Morning pick-up from your hotel in Arusha or Moshi for the drive to Tarangire National Park, famous for large elephant herds, ancient baobab trees and a high concentration of wildlife along the Tarangire River. You'll enjoy a full game drive with a picnic lunch inside the park, then continue in the afternoon to your lodge or tented camp in the Karatu area for dinner and overnight.

Distance: Approx. 120 km from Arusha, full day including game drive

Activity: Full-day game drive in Tarangire National Park

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Karatu

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2

Karatu to the Serengeti via the Ngorongoro Highlands

After breakfast, you drive west through the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, pausing at the crater rim viewpoint for your first sight of the caldera floor, then descend onto the Serengeti plains via Naabi Hill Gate. The drive itself is part of the game viewing, with giraffe and zebra often visible along the access road. You'll reach the Seronera area by mid-afternoon for your first Serengeti game drive before dinner and overnight inside the park.

Distance: Approx. 200 km, 4-5 hours driving plus afternoon game drive

Activity: En-route game drive, then afternoon Seronera game drive

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp inside the Serengeti

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3

Full Day in the Serengeti

A full day dedicated to game drives in the Serengeti, with a picnic lunch out on the plains. The Seronera Valley has the highest leopard density in East Africa and a resident lion population that your guide tracks daily, alongside elephant, buffalo, giraffe and (seasonally) the wildebeest migration. Morning and afternoon drives explore different parts of the central Serengeti, with your guide adjusting the route based on recent sightings.

Distance: Game drives within the park, distances vary by wildlife sightings

Activity: Full-day game drive in the central Serengeti

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp inside the Serengeti (second night)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4

Serengeti to the Ngorongoro Highlands

An early morning game drive, the best window for predator activity as lions return from overnight hunts, before you exit the park at Naabi Hill and retrace the route through the highlands toward Ngorongoro. You arrive at a lodge in the Karatu area or near the crater rim in the afternoon, with time to relax before dinner ahead of the next morning's crater descent.

Distance: Approx. 200 km, 4-5 hours driving including morning game drive

Activity: Morning Serengeti game drive, then drive to the Ngorongoro Highlands

Accommodation: Lodge or tented camp in Karatu / near the crater rim

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5

Ngorongoro Crater & Lake Manyara – End of Safari

Early breakfast, then descend into the Ngorongoro Crater for a game drive across its 260 km² floor of grassland, marsh and acacia forest, home to lion, elephant, buffalo and hippo, with one of Tanzania's most reliable black rhino populations. After a picnic lunch near the hippo pool, you ascend the rim road and continue toward Arusha, with a stop at Lake Manyara National Park en route for a shorter game drive among its tree-climbing lions, flamingos and groundwater forest, before the final drive to Arusha or Moshi, or transfer to the airport as arranged.

Distance: Crater floor game drive, then approx. 2 hours to Lake Manyara and 1.5-2 hours on to Arusha

Activity: Ngorongoro Crater floor game drive, then en-route stop at Lake Manyara

Accommodation: N/A, end of safari

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for this 5-day safari?

This is a vehicle-based safari, no fitness threshold applies and no walking is required. Game drives are conducted from a private 4x4 with a pop-up roof, giving everyone a clear view and space to stand for photographs. The longest driving days are Day 2 (to the Serengeti) and Day 5 (back via Lake Manyara), each combining transit with game viewing. Travellers with limited mobility are accommodated, let us know in advance and we'll select lodges with step-free access.

When is the best time of year for this safari?

June to October is the dry season, with animals concentrated at water sources and the highest sighting reliability of the year, this is also when Tarangire's elephant herds are at their largest. January and February is the southern Serengeti calving season, with large predator concentrations and significantly fewer tourists than the peak months. The long rains in April and May can affect lodge access and road conditions, particularly around Lake Manyara, but offer the lowest rates of the year. The Ngorongoro Crater is productive year-round.

What animals will we likely see?

Across this 5-day route you are highly likely to see lion, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hippo, baboon and a wide range of antelope and birdlife. Black rhino is likely on the Ngorongoro Crater floor. Leopard is possible, the Serengeti has the highest leopard density in East Africa, and two full days there meaningfully improves your odds, but leopards are solitary and elusive so sightings still depend on the day's movements. Cheetah is likely on the Serengeti plains, and Lake Manyara adds a chance of tree-climbing lions and flamingos. No operator can guarantee specific sightings.

What's included in the price?

The price covers a private 4x4 safari vehicle with pop-up roof and English-speaking driver-guide, all park entry and conservation fees (Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Conservation Area including the Crater service fee, and Lake Manyara), full-board accommodation as listed for all 5 days, and drinking water throughout. International flights, Tanzania visa, travel insurance, alcoholic drinks, tips and personal expenses are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

How does this compare to the 4-day version?

The 4-day Tanzania Lodge Safari follows a similar route but spends only one night in the Serengeti, with a single afternoon and morning of game drives there. This 5-day version adds a second full day entirely inside the park, plus a stop at Lake Manyara on the return leg that the 4-day version doesn't include. For most travelers, the extra day in the Serengeti is the single change that most improves predator sightings, which is why we recommend 5 days over 4 when your schedule allows.

Is this safari suitable for children?

Yes, this itinerary accepts children of 5 years and older, with children under 12 receiving a discount on park fees per TANAPA policy. The 4x4 comfortably fits a family of four. Game drives are long days (typically 07:00 to 17:00 with breaks), bring books, snacks and patience for younger children. We can adjust the pace and add shorter game-drive days for families with younger children at no extra charge.

What about visas, vaccinations and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Yellow fever vaccination is only required if you're arriving from a yellow-fever-endemic country. Malaria prophylactics are recommended. Comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is required for all safari participants, we cannot accept bookings without it.

What if something goes wrong on safari?

SafariBando operates from Moshi with our own vehicles and team. If a vehicle has an issue, our Arusha operations base dispatches a replacement. If a guide falls ill, we have a replacement available from our team in the same region. All vehicles carry a satellite phone for emergencies, and lodges have radio contact with the operations base. The Flying Doctors Service covers medical evacuation from any of the parks on this itinerary, and we can arrange membership as part of your booking on request.
