Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Victoria Falls and Transfer to Hwange National Park

You are met at Victoria Falls Airport and transferred by road to your lodge in Hwange National Park, a roughly two-hour drive in an air-conditioned minivan. The area takes its name from Hwange National Park itself, established in 1928 after the land’s earlier owner put a stop to hunting and poaching across some 26,000 acres, eventually becoming part of the wider protected reserve that covers 14,600 square kilometres today. On arrival, settle in and relax after the journey before a delicious dinner, surrounded by the sounds of the African wilderness.

Distance: Airport transfer to Hwange National Park, approx. 2 hours

Activity: Arrival and settling in

Accommodation: Lodge in Hwange National Park

Meals: Dinner, breakfast and lunch not included

Day 2

Full Day Safari in Hwange National Park

After a hearty breakfast, set out on your first safari activity with a morning game drive. With over 100 mammal species present, Hwange has the widest variety of any national park in the world, and one of the largest elephant populations, with anywhere from 20,000 to 70,000 individuals congregating around the waterholes toward the end of the dry season. The park also holds an impressive range of antelope, including less common species such as sable antelope and greater kudu. Return to camp by midday for rest and lunch, then choose between an afternoon game drive or a guided walking safari for a closer connection with the bush. Return to camp by sunset for a delicious dinner and a relaxed evening.

Distance: Morning game drive, then choice of afternoon game drive or walking safari

Activity: Full day of safari activities

Accommodation: Lodge in Hwange National Park (second night)

Meals: All meals included, drinks not included

Day 3

Transfer to Victoria Falls

Start the day with an early morning game drive, a good chance to see nocturnal animals as they retire for the day, before returning to camp for a full breakfast. Pack and depart for Victoria Falls by midday, with lunch at your own expense en route. In the evening, you are collected from your lodge and transferred to a Boma Dinner, an Afrocentric feast paired with an African drumming show. The four-course meal begins with a shared starter platter, followed by campfire soup, a selection of salads and vegetarian dishes, a braai buffet featuring game meats and stews, and a spread of desserts, all building to an interactive drumming performance that makes this a genuine Victoria Falls must-do. Afterwards, retire to your lodge.

Distance: Morning game drive, then road transfer to Victoria Falls

Activity: Travel day, evening Boma Dinner experience

Accommodation: Lodge in Victoria Falls

Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner not included

Day 4

The Smoke That Thunders

After breakfast, come face to face with the mighty Victoria Falls on a guided tour with an experienced guide, taking in all 16 viewing points along a walking trail that stretches 1,700 metres. A rain jacket is recommended if you’d rather not get soaked, along with a waterproof bag for cameras and phones. Afterwards, an optional helicopter flight over the falls offers a complete aerial perspective, alongside a range of other optional activities to fill your day, with lunch at your own expense. In the late afternoon, join a luxury sunset cruise on the Zambezi, upriver from the falls, sipping a sundowner drink and snacks as you take in one of Africa’s memorable sunsets, with hippos, crocodiles and a variety of birdlife often in view. After the two-hour cruise, enjoy a three-course dinner on the riverbank before returning to your lodge.

Frequently asked questions

What is a Boma Dinner?

A Boma Dinner is a traditional Victoria Falls dining experience offered by several venues in town, combining a multi-course African feast with live drumming and dance. It's a well-established cultural evening rather than a single proprietary restaurant, and a popular way to spend an evening in Victoria Falls.

How fit do I need to be for this 5-day trip?

Game drives are vehicle-based, with an optional walking safari in Hwange and a 1,700-metre walking tour at Victoria Falls. It suits most fitness levels.

Will I see the Big Five at Hwange?

Hwange holds healthy populations of elephant, buffalo, lion and leopard, with rhino also present in some areas. As with any wildlife safari, no individual sighting can be guaranteed, though the park's wide variety of mammals gives good odds across two full days of activities.

What optional activities are available at Victoria Falls?

Beyond the included guided falls tour and sunset cruise, optional add-ons typically include a helicopter flight over the falls and other activities such as white water rafting or bungee jumping, available to book locally at an additional cost.

What's included in the price?

The price covers park fees for non-residents, all activities unless labelled as optional, all accommodation unless listed as an upgrade, a professional driver-guide, all transportation unless labelled as optional, all taxes and VAT, roundtrip airport transfers, and the meals specified in the day-by-day itinerary. International flights, drinks, some meals as specified, additional accommodation before or after the tour, optional activities, tips and personal items such as souvenirs, travel insurance and visa fees are not included.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Zimbabwe tourist visa on arrival or online before travel, and a regional KAZA visa covering both Zimbabwe and Zambia is also available for travellers visiting both sides of the falls. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended for any safari trip.
