Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Mana Pools

The road transfer from Harare to Mana Pools takes around seven hours. On arrival, take in the surroundings of the park before driving to your exclusive tented camp, your base for all the exploring ahead. Walks lead straight out from camp, alongside drives that range further afield, with the Mana floodplains offering excellent game viewing right from the start.

Activity: Arrival and settling in

Accommodation: Exclusive tented camp in Mana Pools National Park

Meals: Lunch & dinner, breakfast not included

Day 2

Walking Safari Along the Zambezi Floodplains

This morning’s walk follows the floodplains close to camp, where elephant and buffalo are often found grazing within easy view, and your guide points out tracks and signs from the animals that passed through overnight. Return to camp for lunch and a rest through the heat of the day, then head out again in the afternoon for a game drive further into the park, looking for the predators that become more active as the temperature drops.

Distance: Morning walking safari, afternoon game drive

Activity: Walking safari and game drive

Accommodation: Exclusive tented camp in Mana Pools National Park (second night)

Meals: All meals included, drinking water, beer and wine provided

Day 3

Exploring the Mana Pools Interior

Today’s morning activity heads deeper into the park’s interior by vehicle, away from the riverside routes covered so far, in search of lion and the park’s notable population of tree-climbing elephants. Return to camp for lunch and a rest, then set out again in the afternoon on foot, tracking game on a slower, more deliberate pace than the morning’s drive.

Distance: Morning game drive into the interior, afternoon walking safari

Accommodation: Exclusive tented camp in Mana Pools National Park (third night)

Meals: All meals included, drinking water, beer and wine provided

Day 4

A Final Full Day of Walks and Drives

A last full day to explore Mana Pools at your own pace, with your guide tailoring the morning and afternoon outings to whatever you haven’t yet had the chance to see, whether that’s a return to a favourite waterhole, a longer walk along the river, or simply more time watching the floodplains from camp.

Frequently asked questions

What makes Mana Pools different from other Zimbabwe safaris?

Mana Pools is one of the few parks in southern Africa where unguided walking is technically possible, though this itinerary keeps all walks guided for safety. The combination of riverside floodplains, large mammal density and a genuinely remote feel makes it a favourite among experienced safari travellers.

How fit do I need to be for the walking safaris?

Walks are at a relaxed pace and tailored to the group, but do involve walking on uneven ground for a few hours at a time, sometimes in heat. Reasonable fitness and comfortable closed shoes are recommended.

Will I see elephants at Mana Pools?

Mana Pools is well known for its population of elephants, including some that stand on their hind legs to reach high foliage, alongside good numbers of buffalo, hippo and crocodile along the river. As with any wildlife safari, no individual sighting can be guaranteed.

When is the best time of year to visit Mana Pools?

The dry season, from May to October, is considered the best time, as wildlife concentrates along the river and floodplains while the rest of the park dries out. Most camps, including this one, close during the wettest months when the park's access roads can become impassable.

What's included in the price?

The price covers park fees for non-residents, all activities unless labelled as optional, all accommodation unless listed as an upgrade, camping equipment, bed linen and bath towels, a professional driver-guide, all transportation unless labelled as optional, all taxes and VAT, roundtrip airport transfers, and the meals and drinks specified in the day-by-day itinerary. International flights, additional accommodation before or after the tour, some meals as specified, premium drinks beyond the included beer and wine, tips and personal items such as souvenirs, travel insurance and visa fees are not included.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Zimbabwe tourist visa on arrival or online before travel. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended given the remote setting of this camp.
