Great Zimbabwe is a ruined city in the south-eastern hills of the country, near the town of Masvingo, and was the capital of the Kingdom of Zimbabwe during the country’s Late Iron Age, believed to have served as a royal palace for the local monarch. Construction began in the 11th century and continued until the 15th, with the stone city spanning 722 hectares and, at its peak, housing as many as 18,000 people. Great Zimbabwe has since been adopted as a national monument, and the modern state takes its name from it.

Activity: Guided tour of the Great Zimbabwe ruins

Accommodation: Lodge near Great Zimbabwe

Meals: All meals included, non-alcoholic drinks

Day 3

Transfer to and Game Viewing in Matobo National Park

The park holds a wide diversity of fauna, including 175 bird, 88 mammal, 39 snake and 16 fish species, with white rhino, sable antelope, impala and leopard among the highlights. The park has been restocked with white and black rhino and designated an Intensive Protection Zone for both species, alongside hyena, hippo, giraffe, zebra, wildebeest and ostrich. This is one of the few parks where you have a realistic chance of encountering rhino in their natural habitat, alongside Africa’s shy and elusive leopards.

Elsewhere in the park, more commonly seen game includes bushbuck, impala, kudu, giraffe, lion, baboon and monkeys, while dassies (rock hyrax) are abundant. Will I see elephants at Hwange National Park?

Hwange is home to one of the largest elephant populations in the world, with tens of thousands of individuals, and they are reliably seen around the park's waterholes, particularly in the dry season. As with any wildlife safari, no individual sighting can be guaranteed.

The price covers park fees for non-residents, all activities unless labelled as optional, all accommodation unless listed as an upgrade, a professional driver-guide, all transportation unless labelled as optional, all taxes and VAT, roundtrip airport transfers, and the meals and drinks specified in the day-by-day itinerary.
