6-Day Kilimanjaro Climb - Rongai Route

Overview

The Rongai Route is the only approach to Kilimanjaro from the north, starting near the Kenyan border and climbing through genuinely remote forest before crossing onto the mountain's drier eastern side. It sees far less traffic than Machame or Lemosho, and because this side of the mountain gets less rainfall, climbers often get clearer views of the summit on the approach. Wildlife, including antelope, buffalo and occasionally elephant, is more commonly seen on the lower slopes here than on the southern routes.

This 6-day itinerary climbs via Simba Camp, Second Cave and Third Cave to Kibo Hut, the summit base camp on this side of the mountain, then descends via the Marangu Route, the only route with hut accommodation, spending the final night on the mountain at Horombo Hut before exiting at Marangu Gate. Climbing one route and descending another is one of Rongai's distinctive features, you get a genuinely different landscape on the way down. Trekkers who want an extra acclimatization day via Mawenzi Tarn should look at our 7-Day Rongai Route Climb.

Tour Highlights

  • The only route approaching Kilimanjaro from the north, near the Kenyan border, with low climber traffic
  • Drier eastern slopes mean less rain and often clearer summit views than the southern routes
  • Good chances of antelope, buffalo and occasionally elephant on the lower forest slopes
  • Climb via Kibo Hut, descend via the Marangu Route's huts, two different landscapes on one trek
  • Summit Uhuru Peak (5,895m) via Gilman's Point
  • 2 nights at a hotel in Moshi included, the night before and the night after the climb

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arrival in Moshi & Pre-Climb Briefing

Your SafariBando representative meets you at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfers you to your hotel in Moshi. In the evening, your mountain guide runs through the route, weather expectations, and a full equipment check, so any missing gear can be rented locally before you set off.

Distance: Airport transfer, approx. 45 minutes

Activity: Arrival, equipment check and pre-climb briefing

Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi

Meals: Dinner

Day 2

Nale Moru to Simba Camp

It's around a 3 to 4 hour drive from Moshi to the Rongai Gate near Nale Moru on the mountain's northern side, close to the Kenyan border, with far fewer vehicles and climbers than the gates on the south side. The trail starts gently through pine forest and into moorland, with a genuine chance of spotting buffalo, antelope or other wildlife on the lower slopes. Simba ("Lion") Camp sits at the forest's edge with views north toward Kenya.

Distance: Approx. 8 km, 3-4 hours walking (plus 3-4 hour drive from Moshi)

Activity: Drive to Rongai Gate, then trek through forest and moorland

Accommodation: Simba Camp (tented camp, 2,650m)

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 3

Simba Camp to Second Cave

The trail continues up through moorland, with Kibo's summit dome and the jagged peaks of Mawenzi both visible on clear days. Second Cave, a rock shelter historically used by early climbers, sits on an open ridge with sweeping views, this side of the mountain is noticeably less crowded than the standard southern approaches.

Distance: Approx. 8 km, 5-6 hours walking

Activity: Trek through moorland with views of Kibo and Mawenzi

Accommodation: Second Cave (tented camp, 3,450m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 4

Second Cave to Third Cave

The vegetation thins quickly into alpine desert as you gain altitude, with Mawenzi's jagged ridgeline dominating the view to the east. Third Cave, another rock shelter on the route, sits in this stark, open landscape, a shorter day that allows time to rest and acclimatize before the push toward Kibo Hut tomorrow.

Distance: Approx. 5 km, 3-4 hours walking

Activity: Trek through alpine desert toward Mawenzi

Accommodation: Third Cave (tented camp, 3,900m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 5

Third Cave to Kibo Hut

The trail crosses The Saddle, a vast, barren high-altitude plain between Mawenzi and Kibo, exposed to sun and wind with little shelter. Kibo Hut, the summit base camp on this side of the mountain, sits at the foot of the final ascent. An early dinner is served, since the summit attempt begins around midnight.

Distance: Approx. 8 km, 4-5 hours walking

Activity: Cross The Saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo to Kibo Hut

Accommodation: Kibo Hut (dormitory, 4,700m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & early Dinner

Day 6

Summit Day – Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak via Gilman's Point & Descent to Horombo Hut

Your guide wakes you around 23:00 for tea and biscuits before setting off around midnight. The ascent climbs steep scree switchbacks to Gilman's Point (5,681m) on the crater rim, then follows the rim past Stella Point to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), usually arriving around sunrise. After photos and a short rest, you descend back to Kibo Hut for a late breakfast, then continue down onto the Marangu Route, a different landscape from the climb up, to Horombo Hut for the night.

Distance: Approx. 21 km (summit and descent to Horombo Hut), 10-13 hours

Activity: Summit climb to Uhuru Peak via Gilman's Point, then descent to Horombo Hut on the Marangu Route

Accommodation: Horombo Hut (dormitory, 3,720m)

Meals: Breakfast (early), Lunch & Dinner

Day 7

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate & Return to Moshi

A long but gentle descent through moorland and back into rainforest, with views opening up over the plains as you lose altitude. At Marangu Gate you'll receive your summit certificate (Gilman's Point or Uhuru Peak certificates are issued depending on your highest point reached). Your driver transfers you back to your hotel in Moshi for a well-earned hot shower, a proper bed, and a celebratory dinner.

Distance: Approx. 20 km, 5-6 hours walking, plus approx. 1 hour drive back to Moshi

Activity: Descent to Marangu Gate, summit certificate ceremony, transfer to Moshi

Accommodation: Hotel in Moshi (second night)

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch (on the mountain)

Day 8

Departure from Moshi

After breakfast, you're free until your transfer to Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) for your onward flight. If you'd rather not end the trip on the mountain, this is also the natural point to roll straight into a Northern Circuit safari, many climbers combine this climb with our 4-Day Tanzania Lodge Safari to Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro for a full climb-and-safari trip.

Distance: Airport transfer, approx. 45 minutes (or onward to your next safari)

Activity: Free morning, then departure transfer or onward safari

Accommodation: N/A, end of Kilimanjaro programme

Meals: Breakfast

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for this 6-day Rongai itinerary?

No technical climbing skills are required. The walking days going up are moderate (3 to 6 hours), with Day 5 crossing The Saddle to Kibo Hut at altitude. Summit night (Day 6) is the main challenge, a continuous 10 to 13 hour effort from midnight including the descent to Horombo Hut. Day 7's descent to Marangu Gate is long (5 to 6 hours) but not steep. Several months of regular cardio and hiking with a loaded daypack are recommended before you travel.

When is the best time to climb the Rongai Route?

The two main dry windows are late June to October and late December to mid-March. Because Rongai approaches from the drier northern side of the mountain, it can be a good choice during the shoulder months when southern routes are wetter, though the summit night and The Saddle are exposed to wind and cold regardless of season. The rainy seasons (April, May and November) bring more cloud cover and reduced visibility on summit night.

What wildlife might we see on the lower slopes?

The forest and moorland on Days 2 and 3 are good habitat, antelope species, buffalo, and occasionally elephant are seen on this side of the mountain more often than on the southern routes, since Rongai sees far less foot traffic. Sightings aren't guaranteed on any given day, but the chances here are genuinely better than on Machame or Marangu's lower slopes.

What's included in the price?

The price covers two nights at a hotel in Moshi (before and after the climb), all park fees, camping and hut fees, and rescue fees, a certified English-speaking guide with the required number of porters and a cook, all camping equipment for the ascent including private tents and a mess tent, hut accommodation on the descent at Horombo Hut, all meals on the mountain, and safety equipment including a pulse oximeter and emergency oxygen. International flights, Tanzania visa, travel insurance, alcoholic drinks, tips for the mountain crew and any optional add-ons are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

Why does this route climb from one side and descend on another?

Rongai is the only route that approaches from the north, but it doesn't have its own descent path from Kibo Hut, climbers descend via the Marangu Route instead, which is also the only route with hut accommodation. This means you experience two genuinely different landscapes, the quiet, drier northern slopes on the way up, and the Marangu Route's huts and forest on the way down, at no extra cost, the descent via Horombo Hut is included in this itinerary.

How does this compare to the 7-Day Rongai Route?

The first three days are identical: Simba Camp, then Second Cave. From there, this 6-day version continues to Third Cave and then Kibo Hut. The 7-day version instead heads toward Mawenzi, with a night at Kikelewa Camp and a further night at Mawenzi Tarn beneath Mawenzi's dramatic eastern face, before joining the same route to Kibo Hut. The extra two days give more time at altitude before the summit attempt, which generally improves success rates, at the cost of two additional days on the mountain.

What about visas, vaccinations and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO). The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Yellow fever vaccination is only required if you're arriving from a yellow-fever-endemic country. Malaria prophylactics are recommended for your time at lower altitudes around Moshi. Comprehensive travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and medical evacuation is required for all climbers, we cannot accept bookings without it.

What happens if I get altitude sickness or need to be evacuated on the mountain?

Your guide carries a pulse oximeter and checks oxygen saturation levels at each camp, along with emergency oxygen for serious cases. Mild altitude symptoms are managed with rest, hydration and, if needed, a controlled descent to a lower camp. For serious cases, porters and guides are trained in stretcher evacuation, and the Marangu Route descent on Days 6-7 is the most accessible of any route for evacuation. We can arrange membership with the Flying Doctors Service for air evacuation as part of your booking on request.
