Nomad Lamai Serengeti — Built Into the Rock Above the Northern Plains

Nomad Lamai Serengeti is one of the most architecturally distinctive camps in the Serengeti. Built directly into the Kogakuria Kopje — a dramatic granite rock formation in the northern Serengeti — the camp's structures emerge from the boulders rather than sitting on top of them: rock stairways wind between boulders, natural rock faces form walls of the lounge and bar, and two swimming pools are carved into the kopje itself using the natural rock as their basin. From this elevated position, the northern Serengeti plains stretch to the horizon, and from late July onwards, the wildebeest migration herds are visible from the lodge itself.

The camp is a permanent property, operated year-round by Nomad Tanzania — the same company running the mobile Nomad Serengeti Safari Camp. The Lamai Triangle's location near the Mara River makes it one of the best-positioned permanent camps for the Great Migration river crossings, with crossing points approximately 20 minutes from camp during peak season (July–November). The area is also excellent year-round for resident game.

Camp Design

Twelve tents are split between a Main Camp and a smaller Private Camp — six tents in each, with the Private Camp offering additional seclusion for families or groups who want their own separate area. The open-fronted design of the rooms frames views like living paintings: whatever is happening on the northern Serengeti plains below is visible from bed, from the bath, and from every seat in the lounge. A library and map room stocked with field guides, a convivial bar built into the kopje rocks, and natural rock swimming pools complete the common areas. The two pools are particularly loved by families with children.

Activities

Morning and afternoon game drives explore the northern Serengeti and the Lamai Triangle — one of the richest wildlife areas in the park. Short walking safaris are available in season. Hot-air balloon safaris can be arranged. The camp's location near Klein's Gate allows access to the Loliondo area, where night drives and extended walking are possible. Cultural visits to local communities can be arranged.

Nomad Lamai is the most family-friendly northern Serengeti camp. The natural rock swimming pools are a particular hit with children, the separate Private Camp works perfectly for families wanting their own space, and the open-fronted rooms give children direct views of the migration from every surface of the camp.
