Namiri Plains β Big Cat Country in the Eastern Serengeti
Namiri Plains occupies one of the most exclusive locations in the entire Serengeti ecosystem. Positioned along the seasonal Ngare Nanyuki River in the eastern Serengeti, this Asilia Africa camp sits in an area that was closed to all tourism for 20 years (1985β2014) to allow the cheetah population to recover under a Franklin Zoological Society research project. The result is a landscape with one of the highest big-cat densities in East Africa β and almost no other vehicles.
The word namiri means "big cat" in Swahili, and the name is earned daily. Lion prides patrol the surrounding grasslands, cheetah mothers hunt Thomson's gazelle on the open plains, leopard move through the scattered acacia woodland, and the smaller serval and caracal are spotted on night-time walks near camp. This is the Serengeti stripped back to its predatorβprey essence β no crowds, no other camps within an hour's drive, and game drives where you are likely the only vehicle at a sighting.
Location and Setting
The camp sits at the transition zone where the Serengeti's southern short-grass plains meet the central acacia woodlands. This boundary habitat attracts a wide prey base β wildebeest, zebra, eland, Thomson's and Grant's gazelle β which in turn supports the exceptional predator density. The nearest airstrip is Seronera, approximately a two-hour scenic drive through prime wildlife country. The remoteness is deliberate: Asilia chose this location specifically because the isolation produces game-drive exclusivity that the busier Seronera corridor cannot match.
Between October and May, the Great Migration herds pass through the eastern Serengeti on their northβsouth circuit. During this window, the camp's location puts guests within reach of vast wildebeest concentrations without the vehicle congestion that builds around the Mara River crossings in the north or the Ndutu calving grounds in the south.
Camp Design and Common Areas
Namiri Plains was comprehensively rebuilt in 2019 with a design that uses natural calcrete β solidified volcanic ash quarried locally β for the suite walls. The stone provides natural insulation: cool during the midday heat, warm through the cold Serengeti nights. The overall aesthetic is contemporary and understated, using earth tones, raw textures and handwoven textiles that keep the focus on the landscape outside rather than competing with it.
The main area includes an open-sided lounge with deep sofas and a library stocked with field guides and reference books on the Serengeti ecosystem. The dining tent serves a continental breakfast buffet each morning, a light lunch buffet at midday, and a three-course dinner in the evening β often served outdoors under the stars. Between activities, guests can cool off in the swimming pool overlooking the plains, book a treatment at the Asilia spa, or simply sit on the pool deck and watch whatever walks past.
Conservation and the Serengeti Cheetah Project
Namiri Plains has a direct relationship with the Serengeti Cheetah Project, which has monitored the eastern Serengeti's cheetah population since the 1970s. Guests can meet the resident cheetah researcher, contribute sighting data from their game drives, and gain a perspective on cheetah conservation that goes well beyond a standard safari briefing. The camp also runs on 100% solar power with a backup generator, uses a comprehensive water purification system, and operates as part of Asilia's B Corpβcertified sustainability programme.
Activities
Morning and afternoon game drives are the core activity, conducted in open-sided 4x4 vehicles with Asilia's resident guides β many of whom have worked this territory since the camp first opened and know individual predators by sight. Walking safaris with an armed ranger are included and offer a ground-level perspective on the grassland ecosystem. Hot-air balloon safaris can be arranged at additional cost for a dawn flight over the plains. The camp also has a dedicated photographic vehicle with custom camera mounts and 360-degree swivel seats, bookable for serious wildlife photographers.
Who Is Namiri Plains Best For?
This is a camp for travellers who prioritise wildlife intensity and solitude over resort-style facilities. If seeing cheetah hunt on open plains with no other vehicle in sight matters more than an infinity pool, Namiri Plains delivers that consistently. It suits couples, photographers, repeat safari visitors who have already done the central Serengeti circuit and want something more exclusive, and families with children aged five and above who can handle full-day game drives.

Rooms & accommodation
Standard Suite
The ten standard suites at Namiri Plains are built from local calcrete β volcanic ash that has solidified over millennia β which naturally regulates temperature inside the tent. Each suite has full-length glass sliding doors that open onto a private viewing deck with a freestanding outdoor resin bathtub facing the plains. Inside, the bedroom centres on a king-size bed (convertible to twins on request) with high-quality linen and mosquito netting. The en-suite bathroom has a walk-in indoor shower with full views of the seasonal riverbed, twin vanity basins, a flush toilet and a lockable safe. Furnishings use natural textures β handwoven textiles, raw wood, earth-toned fabrics β that keep the aesthetic grounded and contemporary.
Family Suite
The family suite shares the same calcrete-and-canvas construction and outdoor bathtub as the standard suites, with an additional connected sleeping area featuring twin beds for up to two children. A canvas partition separates the children's area from the main bedroom, giving parents privacy while keeping younger guests within earshot. The en-suite bathroom, private deck and furnishing standard are identical to the standard suites. Families with children aged five and above are welcome.
The Retreat (2-Bedroom)
The two exclusive-use Retreats at Namiri Plains are a recent addition β each is a self-contained two-bedroom unit with its own lounge, dining area, private pool, and dedicated chef, host and safari guide. The Retreats operate independently from the main camp, meaning guests set their own schedule for game drives, meals and downtime. Each of the two bedrooms has en-suite facilities and can be configured with a king bed or twins. An additional child bed can be added to either bedroom. The Retreats are ideal for families, multi-generational groups, or couples travelling together who want complete privacy.

WhatsApp UsSafariBando's view
Namiri Plains is our top recommendation for travellers whose primary goal is big-cat sightings in genuine solitude. The eastern Serengeti location β over an hour from the nearest other camp β means game drives here feel like private wildlife documentaries rather than shared spectacles. The 2019 rebuild elevated the accommodation to a level that matches the wildlife, and the Serengeti Cheetah Project partnership gives the stay genuine conservation depth. It is not the cheapest camp in the Serengeti, but for the combination of predator density, exclusivity and the quality of Asilia's guiding, the value is exceptional. If you have three nights for the Serengeti and predators are your priority, put them here.β The SafariBando team
