3-Day Chimpanzee Trekking in Gombe Stream National Park

Overview

This 3-day programme gives the most immersive chimpanzee trekking experience available at Gombe Stream National Park — the famous site on the shores of Lake Tanganyika where Dr Jane Goodall began her landmark long-term chimpanzee research in 1960. Three separate tracking sessions across three days maximise the time spent with Gombe's habituated chimpanzee communities, alongside a visit to the Jane Goodall Research Centre and the option to hike to Jane Goodall's Peak for panoramic views of the park and lake. The boat crossing from Kigoma to Gombe sets the tone for an experience that remains genuinely off the beaten track.

For shorter visits, a 2-day version and a day-trip option are also available — see our 2-day Gombe chimpanzee trekking package and Gombe day trip from Kigoma.

An optional hike to Jane Goodall's Peak offers panoramic views across Gombe National Park and Lake Tanganyika for those with the energy and interest. After returning for lunch, the afternoon is spent at the Jane Goodall Research Centre, where you learn about the ongoing chimpanzee conservation research that has continued at Gombe since 1960. Frequently asked questions

Is chimpanzee sighting guaranteed across all three days?

Chimpanzee sightings cannot be guaranteed as these are wild animals in a forest environment. However, Gombe has habituated communities that rangers track daily, and three days significantly improves the probability of extended sightings compared to a day trip or 2-day visit. Rangers locate the group each morning before visitors set out.

What is the observation limit with chimpanzees?

Park regulations allow a maximum of one hour of observation per session with a chimpanzee group, at a minimum distance of 10 metres. This is strictly enforced to prevent disease transmission — chimpanzees share approximately 98% of human DNA and are highly susceptible to human respiratory illnesses.

What is Jane Goodall's Peak and how difficult is the hike?

Jane Goodall's Peak is a viewpoint within Gombe offering panoramic views of the park and Lake Tanganyika. The hike involves a sustained uphill climb on forest trails and is moderately demanding. It is entirely optional — guests who prefer to rest at the lake after the morning tracking session are welcome to do so.

What does the price include?

Pick-up and drop-off in Kigoma, private boat transfers between Kigoma and Gombe, all park entry fees and chimpanzee tracking permits, accommodation inside the park, professional guide and ranger fees, meals as specified, and drinking water.

How does this 3-day programme differ from the 2-day version?

The 3-day programme adds a third chimpanzee tracking session, the Jane Goodall Research Centre visit, the optional hike to Jane Goodall's Peak, and a morning nature walk on the final day — giving a significantly more complete picture of Gombe and its conservation significance.

When is the best time to visit Gombe?

Gombe can be visited year-round. The dry season (June to October) generally makes for easier trekking on less muddy trails, and chimpanzees tend to range at lower elevations. The wet season brings lush vegetation and more wildlife activity but muddier conditions.

Is this suitable for children?

Children are welcome, though the steep forested terrain and the requirement to stay quiet near the chimpanzees means a minimum age of around 12 is generally recommended. Please discuss at booking.

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

Most nationalities require a tourist visa, available as an e-visa in advance or on arrival. Kigoma is typically reached by domestic flight from Dar es Salaam. Yellow fever documentation may be required. Consult a travel health clinic in advance.
