Gombe Day Trip - Chimpanzee Trekking from Kigoma

Chimpanzee sightings cannot be guaranteed — these are wild animals in a forest environment. However, Gombe has well-habituated chimpanzee communities that rangers track daily, and sighting rates are generally high. Rangers locate the group each morning before visitors set out.

The boat journey from Kibirizi Port in Kigoma to Gombe takes approximately one and a half hours each way, depending on conditions on Lake Tanganyika.

Gombe's terrain is steep and forested. The trek involves walking on uneven trails that can be slippery after rain, and the ascent to the Kakombe Waterfalls is a sustained uphill walk. A reasonable level of fitness is recommended.

Return boat transfers from Kigoma to Gombe, transfer from your hotel to the port, all park entrance fees, a ranger guide, a picnic lunch, and one litre of drinking water per person. Kigoma hotel accommodation is not included.

Gombe can be visited year-round. The dry season (June to October) generally makes for easier trekking as trails are less muddy, and chimpanzees tend to range at lower elevations. The wet season brings lush vegetation and more wildlife activity but muddier conditions.

Children are welcome, though the steep forest terrain and the requirement to maintain quiet near the chimpanzees means a minimum age of around 12 is generally recommended. Please discuss at booking.

Most nationalities require a tourist visa, available as an e-visa in advance or on arrival. Kigoma is typically reached by domestic flight from Dar es Salaam. Yellow fever documentation may be required. Consult a travel health clinic in advance.
