3-Day Mahale Mountains Chimpanzee Trekking from Kigoma

Overview

Mahale Mountains National Park sits on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika in western Tanzania — one of the most remote and pristine wildlife destinations in Africa. The park protects the Mahale Mountains chimpanzee population, including the well-studied M-Group family, which has been under continuous scientific observation since the 1960s under the Japanese Primatology Research Group. This 3-day programme includes the road and boat transfer from Kigoma, two nights at the park's lakeside accommodation, one chimpanzee tracking session, and afternoon time for swimming, kayaking, birdwatching, or simply enjoying the lake.

For combined western Tanzania itineraries that pair Mahale with Gombe Stream National Park or Katavi National Park, contact us directly. For Gombe-only packages, see our 3-day Gombe chimpanzee trekking, 2-day Gombe trekking, and Gombe day trip.

Frequently asked questions

Is chimpanzee sighting guaranteed?

Chimpanzee sightings cannot be guaranteed — these are wild animals in a forest environment. However, the M-Group is well habituated and regularly located by experienced trackers, and sighting rates are generally high. Your tracking team monitors chimp movements daily.

Who are the M-Group chimpanzees?

The M-Group is one of the longest-studied wild chimpanzee communities in the world. Japanese researchers from Kyoto University have conducted continuous observation of this group since the 1960s, generating one of the most comprehensive datasets in primatology. Tracking with the M-Group gives a genuine connection to this scientific legacy.

How difficult is the chimpanzee trekking at Mahale?

Mahale's terrain is steeper and more demanding than Gombe's. Tracking can involve extended hiking through dense forest on uneven trails, with the duration depending on where the chimps are that day. A reasonable to good level of fitness is recommended.

What is the observation limit with chimpanzees?

Park regulations allow a maximum of one hour of observation per session at a minimum distance of 10 metres, to prevent disease transmission. Your guide enforces these rules throughout the visit.

What does the price include?

Return road transfers between Kigoma and Mahale Park HQ, return boat transfers into and out of the park, 2 nights full-board accommodation at Mahale Mango Tree Bandas, one chimpanzee tracking permit, all park entrance and village fees, an English-speaking guide, and drinking water during activities.

Can I add a second chimpanzee tracking session?

A second tracking session can be added as an optional upgrade. Please request this at booking — additional permits are subject to daily visitor limits.

How do I get to Kigoma?

Kigoma is served by domestic flights from Dar es Salaam and Arusha. We can assist with domestic flight bookings on request.

Can Mahale be combined with Gombe Stream National Park?

Yes. A combined Kigoma itinerary visiting both Gombe and Mahale is possible, typically over 5-7 days. Contact us to discuss routing and timings.
