6-Day Gombe and Mahale Chimpanzee Safari

Overview

Gombe Stream and Mahale Mountains are Tanzania's two chimpanzee trekking parks on the shores of Lake Tanganyika, and most visitors only manage one or the other. This 6-day itinerary combines both: two chimpanzee tracking sessions at Gombe, where Jane Goodall began her research in 1960, followed by a further tracking session deep in the more remote Mahale Mountains, reached by road and boat from Kigoma.

For Gombe alone, see our 3-Day Gombe Chimpanzee Trekking or 2-Day Gombe Chimpanzee Trekking. For Mahale alone, see our 4-Day Mahale Chimpanzee Trekking. Travellers with more time who also want to add Katavi National Park should see our 9-Day Katavi, Mahale and Gombe Safari, or for a longer twin-park version with extra tracking days, see our 8-Day Gombe and Mahale Chimpanzee Safari.

Tour Highlights

  • Chimpanzee trekking at both Gombe Stream and Mahale Mountains National Parks in one trip
  • Two tracking sessions with the habituated chimpanzee communities of Gombe
  • A further tracking session with the M-Group chimpanzees of Mahale, studied continuously since the 1960s
  • A visit to the Jane Goodall Research Centre at Gombe
  • Boat crossings on Lake Tanganyika, one of the deepest and clearest freshwater lakes in the world
  • Free time for swimming, kayaking, or birdwatching on the Mahale lakeshore

Frequently asked questions

Why combine Gombe and Mahale instead of visiting just one?

The two parks offer different experiences. Gombe is smaller, closer to Kigoma, and is where Jane Goodall began her research in 1960. Mahale is larger, more remote, and reached by a longer road and boat transfer, with a wilder, more pristine setting. Combining both gives two distinct chimpanzee trekking experiences in one trip.

Is chimpanzee sighting guaranteed at both parks?

Chimpanzee sightings cannot be guaranteed, as these are wild animals in a forest environment, but both parks have habituated communities tracked daily by experienced rangers, which gives a high probability of sightings across the three tracking sessions on this itinerary.

How do you travel between Gombe and Mahale?

Both legs are reached via Kigoma. Gombe is approximately 1.5 hours from Kigoma by boat. Mahale is reached by a road transfer along the lake shore to the park headquarters, followed by a boat crossing into the park itself, in total a longer transfer than the Gombe leg.

What is the chimpanzee observation limit?

Park regulations at both Gombe and Mahale allow a maximum of one hour of observation per tracking session, at a minimum safe distance, strictly enforced to prevent disease transmission given how closely chimpanzees are related to humans.

What does the price include?

Pick-up and drop-off in Kigoma, private boat transfers between Kigoma and Gombe, the road and boat transfer to and from Mahale, all park entry fees and chimpanzee tracking permits at both parks, accommodation as per the itinerary, professional guide and ranger fees, meals as specified, and drinking water. Domestic flights to and from Kigoma are not included.

How fit do I need to be for chimpanzee trekking?

Tracking hikes can range from a short walk to several hours on forest trails with some elevation change, depending on where the chimpanzees are located that day. Reasonable fitness and comfortable hiking shoes are recommended, but no technical experience is required.

Can this itinerary be extended?

Yes. Extra tracking days can be added at either park, or the trip can be extended into our 8-Day Gombe and Mahale Chimpanzee Safari for a deeper version of the same route, or combined with Katavi National Park for a full western Tanzania circuit. Contact us to discuss options.

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

Most nationalities require a tourist visa, available as an e-visa in advance or on arrival at major airports. Yellow fever documentation may be required depending on your routing. Consult a travel health clinic in advance.
