3-Day Saadani National Park Safari from Dar es Salaam

Overview

Saadani National Park is one of Tanzania's most distinctive wildlife destinations — the only national park in East Africa where the bush meets the beach. Located on the Indian Ocean coast north of Dar es Salaam, the park protects savannah, mangrove forests, and a stretch of pristine coastline in a single ecosystem. This 3-day safari from Dar es Salaam covers the park's two signature experiences: a game drive across the savannah for elephants, giraffes, lions, and zebras, and a boat safari along the Wami River — one of the best places in Tanzania to see hippos and Nile crocodiles at close range alongside a remarkable variety of waterbirds and mangrove-dwelling wildlife.

Saadani's coastal setting means the morning beach walk on Day 3 offers a genuinely unusual end to a safari — the chance to walk from the bush to the shoreline before departing for Dar es Salaam. For those with more time, the park can be combined with a Zanzibar extension or a visit to the Nyerere (Selous) ecosystem to the south.

Frequently asked questions

What makes Saadani different from other Tanzania national parks?

Saadani is the only national park in East Africa where the savannah directly meets the Indian Ocean coastline. This means a single visit combines a classic game drive, a boat safari on the Wami River, and a beach walk — three quite different experiences in one compact park.

What wildlife can I expect?

The savannah section of the park supports elephants, giraffes, zebras, lions, and warthogs alongside an outstanding variety of birds. The Wami River is particularly good for hippos, Nile crocodiles, mangrove kingfishers, and a wide range of waterbirds. Green turtles also nest on Saadani's beach.

What is the best time of year for Saadani?

Saadani can be visited year-round. The dry season (June to October) offers the best game drive conditions as wildlife concentrates around water sources. The boat safari on the Wami River is excellent in all seasons. The long rains (March to May) are generally avoided as some tracks become muddy.

Is the Wami River boat safari included?

Yes. The park boat safari fees are included in the package price.

What does the price include?

Transport in a 4x4 safari vehicle from Dar es Salaam, all accommodation in Saadani National Park, all meals as specified, all park fees and boat safari charges, a professional English-speaking driver-guide, and bottled drinking water. International flights and visa fees are not included.

Is this suitable for families with children?

Yes. Game drives and the river boat safari are family-friendly. The beach walk on Day 3 is a short, relaxed activity suitable for all ages.

Can Saadani be combined with Zanzibar?

Yes. Saadani's coastal location makes it a natural pairing with a Zanzibar beach extension. Contact us to discuss routing and timings.

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

Most nationalities require a tourist visa, available as an e-visa in advance or on arrival at Dar es Salaam International Airport. Yellow fever documentation may be required. Consult a travel health clinic in advance.
