6-Day Southern Tanzania Safari - Nyerere, Mikumi & Udzungwa Mountains

Overview

This 6-day safari explores three of southern Tanzania's finest wildlife destinations in a single itinerary. Beginning with two days in Nyerere (Selous) National Park — one of Africa's largest protected areas — the route combines a Rufiji River boat safari with full-day game drives in search of the park's famous wild dogs, elephants, lions, and leopards. The safari then moves to Mikumi National Park for two days of open-plain game drives, before a half-day guided hike to the spectacular Sanje Waterfalls in Udzungwa Mountains National Park. The return journey from Morogoro to Dar es Salaam uses the Tanzania Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) — one of East Africa's most scenic and efficient train journeys.

The SGR return leg is part of SafariBando's signature southern circuit package, making this one of the few safari itineraries where the journey home is itself a highlight. For a shorter Mikumi-only option using the SGR, see our 2-day and 3-day Mikumi SGR safari packages.

Your safari begins with a drive from Dar es Salaam to Nyerere (Selous) National Park, one of Africa's largest protected areas. Upon arrival, check in at your camp and in the late afternoon enjoy a sunset boat safari along the Rufiji River. The Rufiji is one of the most wildlife-rich river environments in East Africa, with hippos, Nile crocodiles, and an outstanding variety of waterbirds easily encountered from the boat.

Day 2

Full Day Game Drive in Nyerere (Selous) National Park

A full day exploring the vast landscapes of Nyerere (Selous) National Park. The park is home to exceptional biodiversity: elephant herds, prides of lions, leopards, giraffes, buffalo, and some of the best-known populations of the endangered African wild dog in the world. The Rufiji floodplains and surrounding miombo woodland create a dramatically different landscape from the northern circuit parks, with excellent game drives throughout the day.

Nyerere to Mikumi National Park — Optional Walking Safari or Maasai Visit

After breakfast, the drive heads toward Mikumi National Park. En route you choose between two optional activities: a guided walking safari in Nyerere for an up-close bush experience with a park ranger, or a Maasai cultural visit near Mikumi to learn about traditional pastoralist life. You arrive in Mikumi in the afternoon to settle in for the evening.

The landscape resembles the southern Serengeti in character, with wide plains offering excellent visibility for wildlife sightings and photography. Hippo pools along the Mkata River are a reliable highlight.

Udzungwa is home to several endemic primates including the Sanje Mangabey and the Udzungwa Red Colobus, found nowhere else on earth, alongside rare orchids and plant species. After the hike you return to Mikumi for the evening.

Frequently asked questions

What makes this southern circuit different from the northern circuit?

The southern parks — Nyerere, Mikumi, and Udzungwa — see far fewer visitors than the northern circuit, making for a more exclusive and remote feeling. Nyerere (Selous) is one of Africa's largest protected areas and famous for its Rufiji River ecosystem and wild dog populations. Udzungwa's Sanje Waterfalls hike is unique — a safari experience involving tropical rainforest and endemic primates not found on any northern itinerary.

What is the SGR train and why is it included?

The Tanzania Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) connects Dar es Salaam to Morogoro in approximately 2.5 hours — far faster and more comfortable than the road. Including the SGR return on Day 6 is a deliberate itinerary decision: it is efficient, scenic, and represents SafariBando's commitment to showcasing modern Tanzania infrastructure alongside its wilderness.

What wildlife can I expect in Nyerere (Selous)?

Nyerere is famous for its Rufiji River ecosystem — excellent for hippos, Nile crocodiles, and waterbirds from the boat safari. On game drives, elephants, lions, leopards, and giraffes are commonly encountered, along with the park's well-known populations of African wild dogs.

What is the Sanje Waterfalls hike like?

The Sanje Waterfalls hike is a half-day guided trek through Udzungwa's tropical rainforest. The trail climbs through forest before reaching the falls, which plunge over 170 metres. The hike involves sustained uphill walking and is moderately demanding. It is led by a park ranger throughout.

What does the price include?

All park fees and government taxes, full-board accommodation throughout, boat safari and game drives in Nyerere and Mikumi, guided hiking in Udzungwa, a private 4x4 safari vehicle with professional guide, drinking water, transfers from Dar es Salaam to Nyerere and from Mikumi to Morogoro, and the SGR train ticket from Morogoro to Dar es Salaam.

Is this itinerary suitable for families?

Yes, with some consideration. The Udzungwa hike on Day 5 involves sustained walking and is more suitable for children aged 10 and above. All game drives are family-friendly. Please discuss your family composition at booking.

Can the itinerary be customised?

Yes. Extra nights in Nyerere or Mikumi can be added, or the tour can be extended with a Zanzibar beach stay. Contact us to discuss options.

Do I need a visa for Tanzania?

Most nationalities require a tourist visa, available as an e-visa in advance or on arrival at Dar es Salaam International Airport. Yellow fever documentation may be required. Consult a travel health clinic in advance.
