4-Day Mikumi & Udzungwa Safari from Dar es Salaam by SGR Train

Morning hotel pick-up and transfer to the SGR station in Dar es Salaam for the train to Morogoro (approximately 2.5 hours). Your guide meets you at Morogoro station and drives to Mikumi National Park. After lunch, an afternoon game drive through the park's open savannah gives the first opportunity to spot elephants, giraffes, zebras, lions, and wildebeest. Dinner and overnight at your camp.

After breakfast, a full day exploring Mikumi National Park. The Mkata floodplain at the heart of the park is known for its exceptional wildlife density and open visibility — large elephant herds, buffalo, wildebeest, and predators including lions and leopards are all regularly seen. A picnic lunch is taken in the field before afternoon drives continue until evening.

After breakfast, the drive heads to Udzungwa Mountains National Park (approximately 1.5 hours). A guided hike through dense tropical rainforest leads to the Sanje Waterfalls, which cascade 170 metres in a dramatic two-tier drop. Udzungwa is home to two primate species found nowhere else on earth — the Sanje Mangabey and the Udzungwa Red Colobus — alongside a remarkable diversity of birds and plant life. Lunch is taken at the falls before the hike back and the return to Mikumi for the evening.

The morning begins with a guided walking safari in Mikumi National Park, led by an armed park ranger. Walking allows close observation of wildlife at ground level alongside the chance to identify animal tracks, learn about bush plants, and experience the park in a fundamentally different way from a vehicle. After the walk, a visit to a nearby Maasai community provides an introduction to traditional pastoralist life and culture. The drive to Morogoro station then connects to the afternoon SGR train back to Dar es Salaam.
