4-Day Mount Meru Climb - Momela Route

Overview

Mount Meru (4,565m) rises inside Arusha National Park, around an hour from Arusha and roughly 50 miles west of Kilimanjaro. It's Tanzania's second-highest mountain and a serious climb in its own right, but with a fraction of Kilimanjaro's foot traffic. Because the lower slopes pass through genuine wildlife habitat, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and sometimes elephant are all possible on Day 1, an armed national park ranger accompanies every group for the duration of the climb. Accommodation is in mountain huts at Miriakamba (2,500m) and Saddle Hut (3,500m), and the summit, sometimes called Socialist Peak, offers one of the best views of Kilimanjaro anywhere in Tanzania on a clear morning.

This 4-day itinerary is the standard Momela Route trek, descending all the way back to Miriakamba Hut after the summit for a more gradual final descent. Meru is widely used as an acclimatization climb before Kilimanjaro, reaching 4,565m here measurably improves your body's readiness for altitude on a subsequent Kilimanjaro attempt. If you're combining the two, ask us about pairing this with any of our Kilimanjaro climbs. Trekkers on a tighter schedule can also consider our 3-Day Mount Meru Climb, which covers the same route with a more demanding final day.

Tour Highlights

  • A genuine wildlife encounter on Day 1, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and sometimes elephant on the lower slopes, with an armed ranger as standard
  • Far fewer climbers than Kilimanjaro, on a mountain that's still a serious 4,565m ascent
  • Hut accommodation at Miriakamba and Saddle Hut, no tents to pitch
  • Optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m) on Day 2
  • Summit views of Mount Kilimanjaro and the Momela Lakes on a clear morning
  • Widely used as an acclimatization climb ahead of Kilimanjaro

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Arusha to Miriakamba Hut

Your SafariBando driver collects you from your hotel in Arusha after an early breakfast and transfers you to Momella Gate in Arusha National Park. While porters organize the loads, you and your guide complete TANAPA registration, then begin the ascent. The first day's walk feels like a walking safari: giraffe, buffalo, zebra, warthog and antelope are all commonly seen on the lower slopes, and elephant are present in the park though sightings are less predictable. Because of the wildlife, an armed park ranger walks with the group for the entire climb. The trail passes the Ngarenanyuki River and a waterfall at the base of the mountain before reaching Miriakamba Hut, where your crew prepares a hot dinner and washing water.

Distance: Approx. 12-15 km, 5-7 hours walking

Activity: Walking-safari-style ascent through Arusha National Park, with armed ranger

Accommodation: Miriakamba Hut (dormitory, 2,500m)

Meals: Lunch & Dinner

Day 2

Miriakamba Hut to Saddle Hut

A shorter but steeper day, climbing along the ridge of the saddle with views of Mount Meru's crater and the Ash Cone below. After arriving at Saddle Hut, those who are acclimatizing well have the option of an additional hike up Little Meru (3,820m) with their guide, a worthwhile extra few hundred metres of altitude gain that helps prepare the body for the summit night. An early dinner is served so you can be asleep by around 19:00 ahead of a midnight start.

Distance: Approx. 4-5 km, 3-5 hours walking (plus optional Little Meru hike)

Activity: Ascend to Saddle Hut, optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m)

Accommodation: Saddle Hut (dormitory, 3,500m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 3

Summit Day – Saddle Hut to Socialist Peak & Descent to Miriakamba Hut

Your guide wakes you around 00:30 for tea and biscuits before setting off at roughly 01:30. The trail climbs a steep ridge to Rhino Point (3,800m) and on to Cobra Point (4,350m), with a rocky scramble on the final ridge to the summit, Socialist Peak (4,565m), usually reached around sunrise. On a clear morning the views take in Kilimanjaro across the plains and the Momela Lakes far below. After summit photos, you descend all the way back to Saddle Hut for a late breakfast, then continue down to Miriakamba Hut for the night.

Distance: Approx. 16-18 km (summit and descent to Miriakamba), 10-12 hours

Activity: Summit climb to Socialist Peak (4,565m), then descent to Miriakamba Hut

Accommodation: Miriakamba Hut (dormitory, 2,500m)

Meals: Breakfast (early), Lunch & Dinner

Day 4

Miriakamba Hut to Momella Gate & Arusha

A final, gentler descent through forest back to Momella Gate, where you'll receive your summit certificate. More wildlife sightings are common on this stretch as you descend back through the park. Your driver transfers you back to your hotel in Arusha.

Distance: Approx. 10 km, 3-4 hours walking, plus transfer to Arusha

Activity: Descent to Momella Gate, summit certificate, transfer to Arusha

Accommodation: N/A, end of climb

Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be to climb Mount Meru?

Meru is a genuine climb to 4,565m, and while it's generally considered less demanding than Kilimanjaro, it shouldn't be underestimated. Day 1 is the longest walking day (5 to 7 hours), and summit night (Day 3) involves 10 to 12 hours of walking including a steep, occasionally rocky final ridge. Regular cardio and hiking with a loaded daypack in the months before you travel are recommended. No technical climbing skills are required.

When is the best time to climb Mount Meru?

The dry seasons, late June to October and late December to March, offer the most stable weather and the best chance of clear summit views over Kilimanjaro. The mountain is climbable year-round, but the rainy seasons (April, May and November) bring muddier lower slopes and more cloud cover on the upper mountain.

What wildlife might we see on the climb?

Day 1 passes through genuine wildlife habitat inside Arusha National Park. Giraffe, buffalo, zebra, warthog and various antelope species are commonly seen, and elephant are present in the park though sightings are less predictable. This is precisely why an armed ranger accompanies every group for the duration of the climb, a requirement of Tanzania National Parks, not an optional extra.

What's included in the price?

The price covers transport between Arusha and Momella Gate, all Arusha National Park entry and climbing fees, a certified English-speaking guide, the mandatory armed ranger, porters, a cook, hut accommodation for 3 nights, and all meals on the mountain as specified. International flights, Tanzania visa, travel insurance, tips for the mountain crew, and accommodation in Arusha before or after the climb are not included. See the full "What's included" and "Not included" sections on this page for the complete breakdown.

Is Mount Meru a good acclimatization climb for Kilimanjaro?

Yes, it's one of the most popular ways to prepare for a Kilimanjaro attempt. Spending a night at 3,500m and reaching 4,565m on Meru gives your body real exposure to altitudes close to what you'll face on Kilimanjaro's lower camps, and climbers who do Meru first generally report an easier time acclimatizing on Kilimanjaro. The two climbs are usually scheduled back to back with a rest day or two in Arusha or Moshi in between.

What should I pack for Mount Meru?

Similar to Kilimanjaro but for slightly lower altitudes and shorter exposure: a warm layered system (base layer, fleece or down mid-layer, waterproof shell), a sleeping bag rated to at least -5°C, sturdy hiking boots, a headtorch, trekking poles, and sun protection. Huts provide a roof and bunk but no bedding, so a sleeping bag is essential. We provide a detailed packing list after booking, and gear rental is available in Arusha if you're missing anything.

What about visas, vaccinations and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Tanzania tourist visa online via the eTA system before travel, or on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) or Arusha Airport. The visa costs USD 50 for most nationalities and USD 100 for US citizens. Yellow fever vaccination is only required if you're arriving from a yellow-fever-endemic country. Comprehensive travel insurance covering trekking and medical evacuation is required for all climbers, we cannot accept bookings without it.

What happens if I get altitude sickness or need to be evacuated on the mountain?

Your guide monitors how everyone in the group is coping with the altitude, particularly after the night at Saddle Hut (3,500m). Mild symptoms are managed with rest, hydration and, if needed, a controlled descent to Miriakamba Hut. For serious cases, porters and guides are trained in stretcher evacuation to Momella Gate, which is closer and more accessible than Kilimanjaro's gates, and we can arrange membership with the Flying Doctors Service for air evacuation as part of your booking on request.
