4-Day Mount Kenya Climb - Naro Moru Route

Overview

The Naro Moru Route is the fastest and most direct way up Mount Kenya, reaching Point Lenana, the mountain’s highest non-technical summit, in just 4 days. The trade-off for its speed is a steeper gradient than the other main routes, including the notorious Vertical Bog on Day 2, making this the choice for fit trekkers who are short on time rather than first-time high-altitude climbers.

For a gentler, more gradual climb with better acclimatization, see our 5-Day Sirimon Route Mount Kenya Climb. For the most scenic option, see our 6-Day Sirimon-Chogoria Mount Kenya Traverse.

Tour Highlights

  • The fastest route to Point Lenana (4,985m), Mount Kenya's highest non-technical summit
  • Mackinder's Camp (4,200m) in the dramatic, glacier-carved Teleki Valley
  • The famous Vertical Bog, a steep tussock-grass ascent that is a rite of passage on this route
  • Close-range mountain forest and bamboo zone wildlife, including the chance of elephant and buffalo sign
  • A pre-dawn summit push for sunrise views over the Kenyan highlands

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

Nairobi to Naro Moru Gate and Met Station

After an early pick-up from your Nairobi hotel, the drive north passes Mount Kenya's western foothills to the town of Naro Moru. At the National Park gate, your guide completes registration before the trek begins through dense montane forest and bamboo, climbing steadily to Met Station, the first overnight camp at the upper edge of the forest zone.

Distance: Approximately 3 hours driving from Nairobi, then 3 to 4 hours walking, 10 km

Activity: Drive to Naro Moru, afternoon trek through forest and bamboo to Met Station

Accommodation: Met Station (camping or basic bandas, 3,050m)

Meals: Lunch and Dinner

Day 2

Met Station to Mackinder’s Camp via the Vertical Bog

The trail leaves the forest behind for open alpine moorland, climbing through the infamous Vertical Bog, a steep, often muddy ascent through tussock grassland that is the most physically demanding section of the route. Beyond the bog, the path opens onto Picnic Rocks with sweeping views over the Teleki Valley, before descending gently to Mackinder’s Camp at the foot of the main peaks.

Distance: 6 to 7 hours walking, 11 km

Activity: Trek through alpine moorland and the Vertical Bog to Mackinder’s Camp

Accommodation: Mackinder’s Camp (camping or basic bandas, 4,200m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 3

Summit Point Lenana, Descend to Met Station

A pre-dawn departure, typically around 2 to 3am, leads up scree and rock past the Austrian Hut to Point Lenana (4,985m) for sunrise, with views across to the technical peaks of Batian and Nelion and, on clear mornings, as far as Mount Kilimanjaro. After celebrating at the summit, the long descent retraces the route back through Mackinder’s Camp and down the Vertical Bog to Met Station.

Distance: Summit push approximately 4 to 5 hours, full descent day approximately 8 to 9 hours, 21 km total

Activity: Pre-dawn summit of Point Lenana, full-day descent to Met Station

Accommodation: Met Station (camping or basic bandas, 3,050m)

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 4

Met Station to Naro Moru Gate, Transfer to Nairobi

A final descent through bamboo and montane forest brings you to the Naro Moru Gate, where your vehicle is waiting. The drive returns to Nairobi, arriving by mid to late afternoon.

Distance: 2 to 3 hours walking, 9 km, then approximately 3 hours driving back to Nairobi

Activity: Final descent to the gate, then drive back to Nairobi

Accommodation: N/A, end of climb

Meals: Breakfast and Lunch

Frequently asked questions

Is the Naro Moru Route harder than the other Mount Kenya routes?

Yes. The Naro Moru Route gains altitude faster than the Sirimon or Chogoria routes, particularly through the Vertical Bog on Day 2, which makes it more physically demanding and gives your body less time to acclimatize. It is best suited to fit trekkers who are short on time rather than first-time high-altitude climbers.

What is the Vertical Bog?

A steep section of tussock grassland and mud on Day 2 of the Naro Moru Route, notorious among Mount Kenya guides for being physically tough underfoot, particularly after rain. Despite the name, it is a steep slope rather than a true vertical climb.

Do I need technical climbing experience to reach Point Lenana?

No. Point Lenana (4,985m) is a non-technical trekking summit reached on foot over scree and rock, requiring no ropes or climbing equipment. The higher technical peaks of Batian and Nelion are a separate undertaking requiring rock climbing experience and are not part of this itinerary.

What does the price include?

Private transport between Nairobi and the trailhead, all park and KWS fees, a certified mountain guide, sufficient porters, a cook and all meals on the mountain, camping equipment, and safety equipment including a pulse oximeter.

What is the best time of year to climb Mount Kenya?

The two main dry windows are January to March and July to October, when trail conditions are best and views from the summit are clearest. The Vertical Bog in particular becomes considerably harder going during the rainy seasons of April, May and November.

Could I add a day for better acclimatization?

The Naro Moru Route is normally climbed in 4 days without a dedicated rest day, which is part of why it is more demanding. Travellers who want a built-in acclimatization day should consider our 5-Day Sirimon Route instead, which includes a rest day at Shipton’s Camp before the summit push.
