Amboseli enjoys a spectacular backdrop of snow-capped Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain. Tsavo West offers a visit to Mzima Springs, where an underwater observation tank lets you watch fish, crocodile and hippo at close range, while Tsavo East is known for its red elephants, dust-bathed in the park’s distinctive red soil.

Tour Highlights

  • A morning game drive in Tsavo West with strong odds of close-range leopard sightings
  • Mzima Springs, where an underwater observation tank reveals hippo, crocodile and fish
  • Spectacular views of Mount Kilimanjaro from Amboseli National Reserve
  • Tsavo East's famous red elephants, named for the park's distinctive red soil
  • A convenient round trip from the Kenyan coast, ideal for travellers based in Mombasa or Diani

Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1

On the Way to Tsavo West

An early morning departure from your coastal hotel takes you along the main Mombasa-Nairobi highway into Tsavo West National Park for a first morning game drive en route to your lodge, with good chances of spotting leopard at close range. Check in for lunch, relax by the pool during the heat of the day, then head out for a further afternoon game drive before returning to the lodge for dinner.

Activity: Morning and afternoon game drives

Accommodation: Lodge in Tsavo West National Park

Meals: All meals included, drinking water provided

Day 2

From Tsavo West to Amboseli

After an early breakfast, check out with game viewing en route to Amboseli National Reserve, stopping at Mzima Springs, which produces over 95 million gallons of water daily and offers an underwater observation tank for viewing hippo, crocodile and fish. To the west of Amboseli, a seasonal lake attracts waterfowl, though for much of the year it is a dry, soda-crusted bed where desert mirages shimmer across the surface. Sightings can include elephant, buffalo, lion, wildebeest, giraffe, zebra, baboon and the endangered black rhino. After lunch at your lodge, relax before a late-afternoon game drive, an ideal time to spot game, before returning for dinner.

Distance: Road transfer via Mzima Springs to Amboseli

Activity: Travel day with a Mzima Springs stop, afternoon game drive

Accommodation: Lodge or camp in Amboseli National Reserve

Meals: All meals included, drinking water provided

Day 3

From Amboseli to Tsavo East

A morning game drive in Amboseli after breakfast is followed by the drive to Tsavo East National Park, home of the famous red elephants, with further game viewing en route. Settle in for lunch with panoramic views and the chance to watch animals at the waterholes from the lodge, before an afternoon game drive when the odds of spotting the park’s wild cats are at their highest.

Frequently asked questions

How fit do I need to be for this 4-day trip?

This is an entirely vehicle-based safari, including the visit to Mzima Springs, which is viewed from a walkway and underwater observation tank. It suits all fitness levels.

Will I see Mount Kilimanjaro from Amboseli?

Amboseli is widely considered the best place in Africa to view Kilimanjaro, with the clearest views typically in the early morning before clouds build over the summit later in the day. As with any mountain view, clear conditions can't be guaranteed on a specific date.

Why are Tsavo East's elephants red?

Tsavo East's elephants regularly dust-bathe in the park's distinctive red volcanic soil, which coats their skin and gives them a reddish appearance, a well-known and harmless natural behaviour rather than a different elephant subspecies.

When is the best time of year for this safari?

The dry seasons, from June to October and January to February, offer the easiest game viewing as animals concentrate around remaining water sources. The wetter months bring lush scenery but can make some game viewing less predictable.

What's included in the price?

The price covers park fees for non-residents, all activities unless labelled as optional, all accommodation unless listed as an upgrade, a professional driver-guide, all transportation unless labelled as optional, all taxes and VAT, roundtrip airport transfers, and the meals and drinking water specified in the day-by-day itinerary. International flights, additional accommodation before or after the tour, tips and personal items such as souvenirs, travel insurance and visa fees are not included.

What about visas and travel insurance?

Most nationalities can obtain a Kenya tourist visa online before travel, and a regional East Africa visa covering Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda is also available. Travel insurance covering medical evacuation is recommended for any safari trip.
